Not likely to be a Euro.

On a Euro, the rear license plate mounting screws are spaced wider. To mount a US plate, you would have to drill new holes in the plate, or southern engineer some kind of adaptor. Or replace the trunk lid.

Anyone have a quick way of determining if these are authentic euros or aftermarket crap?

If they are real they should have Bosch or Mercedes marks on them somewhere, probably a part number.

Good point but I've got experience with a rabbit diesel as well as a 240D. Also, I think the VW was closer to 48 hp. Wasn't the 240D rated at 62hp until 1979 when the "bumped" it to 71hp?
