93 300D 5 -speed for sale

Hello all,

I have a '93 300D 2.5 turbo with a 5-speed installed up for sale.

Car is in good shape, has 255K on it and is gray with cream beige interior.

What I have done:

Installed tranny from 1984 190E 2.3 5 speed.
Swapped rear differential from 2.65 to 3.27 gearing.
New injectors and delivery valve seals.
Installed new IWIS timing chain.
Installed rims from a 99 SLK.
Plus many more odds and ends.......

Car has had a high quality repaint EXCEPT for the rear passenger door and side of roof (Why in the world the PO did this, I have no clue!!!). Looks good going down the road but obvious up close. Why was it painted? Car has a Salvage title due to a rear end collision at some point in the 90's.

If the salvage title doesn't scare you, this is a nice car. Interior is excellent, all accessories work including the climate control. Runs fine except for a pesky lope at idle. Clutch works fine. Only issue is the throwout bearing can be noisy when sitting in neutral.

Still needs a speedometer head (included from a car with a 3.27 rear) installed to read speed correctly.

I've run out of time for all these cars. I built this one to keep, but then a 97 E300 showed up and....well its a never ending cycle......

Asking $2800. Call me at 919-333-3182 if interested. Car is located in the Raleigh, NC area.

Will try to get pictures soon....

Thanks, Klaus

Looking forward to pictures. I'm also curious what engine RPMs are at 70mph, and how does it compare with the automatic. (Mine isn't running, so I don't know this yet.)

klaus kallas 01-15-2010 07:57 PM

Car runs about 2600 rpms at 70. Used to cruise at 1900 with the original 2.65 gears, but that is a bit rough on the engine. I will get some pics tomorrow, but here is a youtube video in the meantime.

I don't guess you want to trade for a rock solid yet amazingly homely W123 wagon?

I have another wagon but I don't have another W124 with a standard tranny. Serious offer but if you're thinning the herd then its hardly a good solution for you.......

Hmmm, just re-read the part about the noisy throw out bearing and loping idle. Not too worried about the loping idle because mine do that at times, but the throw out bearing is troublesome, as it the speedo/odo situation. Still, wagon isn't perfect either. It wishes it only had a door and side roof panel paint issue.... :P

Jimmy L,

Might have considered it at one point, but already have an '87 TD hanging around (not for sale).

Anyway, here is a link to photos (finally!). http://www.flickr.com/photos/rkallas/sets/72157623222826950/ These are unwashed and undetailed, so you will have to use some imagination. Other than the aforementioned door and roof side, it will wash and wax super nice. It honestly is a high quality paint job. Interior needs a good detail but should polish up to near new.

Please note the dent in the back left that is pictured and the small surface rust spot on the C pillar. Other than that, just a few scratches elsewhere.

Thanks for looking, and if calling, please do so before 6pm (baby's bed time).

Well darn, because I sure think I would have done that swap. But I completely understand with the '87 and all.
Wish I was more aggressively trying to sell Smash because I think I would like to daily drive a W124. I just don't want to work out of my '95 and risk messing something up on it though. :o But work is busy and Smash is working well for me so it's just a case of poor timing.
Besides, unless your name is Tyler or Dan you can't buy every MB you see...... :D

Huh? I'm restrained. It had been 2 months between purchases. :D

I want I want!!

If you still have it in a month, unlikely, we will talk. Unless you want any of my cars in my sig lol

Nice looking car! Seems like you price is fair enough.

I've noticed several early 90's 124's including mine, with partial repaints. When I first looked at my car, I assumed the faded scratchy sections were the part that had been repainted. I had it backwards. The shiny side was repainted. Probably matched well when first done.

Good luck on your sale!

Great looking car... but for a newbie, what is the significance of the loping and the noise in the throwout bearing?

would it make a cross country road trip?

gsxr 01-20-2010 10:47 PM

Yeah, could you provide more info on the loping idle? Has the injection pump ever been replaced, rebuilt, or even opened up to change delivery valve seals? Was it like that when you bought it, or did it develop over time, or after a particular repair?

Also - did you ever do a compression test, and has the head gasket been replaced at some point?

klaus kallas 01-21-2010 06:01 AM

Hey guys,

The loping idle was there when I got it. I have replaced the injectors, the timing chain (which was way stretched) and reset the timing. What is it for sure? If I knew it would be fixed! Possible causes: Timing still not quite right, injector, worn cam lobe, low compression in a cylinder (though I doubt that), etc.....

It runs great when first started, then after the glow plugs are done cycling, it will lope. After it is driven some, it gets better. If that is a clue, I hope it helps!

gsxr, no head gasket that I can tell.

Throw-out bearing is not worn, it is simply a bit loose on the clip that retains it and will rattle when not engaged. No big deal, just a noise that I wanted to point out.

Will it drive cross-country? Sure. Do I guarantee it, no. It is a 17 year old car.

I built this to keep after having many 601 engined 190s, but quite honestly, I'm less than impressed with the 602 engine. I found another '97 E300 to convert to a 5 speed, and I adore the 606 engine after having put around 90,000 miles on my wifes the last 5 years. Maybe crazy, but you go with what you like.....

Thanks,
Klaus

Klaus, Thanks for the information. Sounds like a good car. Been looking for a daily driver, and after driving my 85 i dont think i can do any other car then a Benz Diesel.
