'91 560 SEL blk/blk in CT

So my uncle bought this car from the original owner in 1997 and I bought it from him a few years ago - until then it was in Charlotte NC it's whole life. 248k mi, no rust, great condition and LOTS of recent work done. Looks like new but not a show car. Only non-original item on car is the Alpine head unit & speakers (wanted to keep Becker but couldn't get it to sound as good).

Work (all done in last 2 years - 300 miles since work was completed):
-Removed motor, replaced ALL seals/gaskets including front and rear main, upper/lower oil pan gaskets & new lower oil pan, degreased motor, new wtr pump, replaced valve stem seals/motor mounts/engine shocks.
-New timing chain/tensioner/guides.
-New power steering pump and hoses, rebuilt SLS pump, new accumulators, new fuel pumps.
-Rebuilt trans, all seals, pan & flexible cooling lines replaced.
-Front suspension has all new rubber including thrust bushings/guide rod mounts/wheel bearings/OEM shocks/tie rod ends etc.
-New Continental tires
-New brake rotors/hoses/pads
-Rebuilt fuel distributor, new fuel pressure regulator/cold start valve/idle control valve.
-All new hoses including heater hoses behind firewall.
-New kickdown cable, crank position sensor and throttle reference sensor.
-Bumper covers & trim recently repainted.
-Original wheels refinished.
-Interior wood refinished by Heritage Woodworks in NC.
-New rear subframe bushings & diff mount.
-New frt/rear flex discs.

AC compressor is fairly new, new receiver/dryer & all new seals in AC system.
Radiator is only a few years old.

Many more new parts such as coolant expansion tank and washer fluid resevoir but too many to list. I love the car but can't justify it at this point due to finances. Everything works (even sunshade) and she runs like new - no smoke or hesitation. I have extensive service records since new and recepits for all of the parts. Engine compartment is 85% spotless but again not show-car level.
$15,000

Price

$15,000 - willing to negotiate somewhat. Not in a real rush to sell it, anyone who sees it and understands the work that's been completed will agree that it's worth the $$.

I think the market isn't there for your price/mileage.

I recently let my 1990 560SEL (black/parchment) go, due to my unexpected and sudden acquisition of an E320 cabriolet.

I wanted to sell *something* and had a tough time deciding between my 560 and my 280SL. Did a lot of research and had quite a few conversations with some savvy Mercedes people and in the end, decided the 560 was redundant wrt my current fleet, so it was sold.

The market has tanked on these cars. Mine was similar to yours, with a 3 inch thick pedigree dating back to the delivery papers, and a full ownership history (I even spoke to both previous owners before buying the car). All maintenance up to date, many rebuilt systems, and every little button worked perfectly... Paint was incredible, no door dings to speak of, and leather was amazing. I had $12K in the car, drove it 14K miles over 6 years, and sold it for $3500 this past September.

Did I think it was worth more? Hell yes!

Could I have found someone who would have paid more? Maybe, but probably not significantly more.

Near perfect 560SELs with low mileage are struggling to bring high four figure sales. Cars with the kind of mileage ours have, no matter how nice, cannot compete with a low mileage car. Therefore, the price is capped on a high mile car, even when our cars present as well as the low mileage car.

The market stinks, people are shedding themselves of these hobby cars, but the plus side is that if you are a buyer, there are some unbelievable cars out there right now at jaw dropping prices.

Which is how I came to own an E320 cabriolet.........

Jim

Fifteen thousand. Dollars? Let's be serious, even if just but for a moment.

In all honesty the actual selling price of this vehicle should be between $3k-5k. No disrespect to the owner/original poster. However the market for these cars is is at the low end $1k and the high end $5k.

Also at nearly 250,000 miles, head work is coming due. Valve guides and that lot.

A nice car, but I'm afraid its not going to fetch anything higher than 5k at the very most.

Good luck with sale though. Looks like a good car.

Here is a perfect example of a realistically priced 560SEL equal to the condition of the OP's (if not better):

FS: 1991 Mercedes 560SEL, 79k original miles, ridiculous service history. $6750

With 1/3 the miles!

Not trying to be hard on you but I find that hard to believe. If you can get that money for this car, that would be great (and job well done) but I caution you against setting the price this high. As others have said, I wouldn't even expect 1/3 of your asking price with the mileage. Even if you have $20k of receipts, you won't get your money back on these cars--and that is basically across the board for MBs. Is your car a nice example? Definitely! But, not worth 3x market price. Here is the breakdown:

NADA (extremely highly inflated across the board, people only use this to get a high insurance settlement usually) - 6675 fair, 9700 excellent condition and those are RETAIL, not private party.

Edmunds true market value (usually the best gauge of market):
*Trade-in $676 *Private Party Sale $1,508 *Dealer Retail $2,895
$1500-3000 is right on the money, your car given the service history will be on the high end of that. Good luck with your sale, your car is very nice and I hope you are taking this as constructive criticism--as a board we'll help as much as we can.

I figured this was a high figure but basically checking out the market - my buddy was telling me all along that I was insane thinking I could get anywhere near what's in the car and got some amusement/satisfaction when I emailed him the responses to this thread.

It is in great shape, leather is perfect, Heritage Woodworks does an OUTSTANDING job of refinishing the burl (better than new) and no rust/new bumper paint, some new chrome trim and badges.
