For Sale: 1986 300SDL Indianapolis

Selling my 1986 300SDL. Would like to get $3500 PM Me for questions.

--Chris

Located in Indianapolis, IN

VIN: WDBCB25DD3GA267991

Other Info:

230,xxx miles (odo reads about 14k behind due to when my odometer gears broke, I fixed them and it works now)

I think the exterior color is called Smoke Silver. The interior is burgundy.
The car is mechanically sound as far as engine and drive train.
I just did an oil change and sent the oil analysis in to Blackstone and here is what they came back with (I would be happy to email the whole report to anyone interested)

"No problems turned up in the first report from this nicely wearing MB engine. Universal averages
show typical metal readings after about 9,300 miles on the oil. Your run was a third as long as average, and that's why your iron reading is exceptionally low. Iron accumulates in the oil with use, so when you run fewer miles, less iron should accumulate -- that's exactly what's happening here. Other metals should read in the average range regardless of the oil use interval, so your other metals are just fine too. No contamination was found. Great report at 230,000 mi."

I have two of the "square" keys

I acquired it in Dec. 2011 because I wanted a diesel 126 to complement my 420SEL. However, now, I realize I have basically two similar cars so I think I want to sell it and get a 124 wagon, preferably the coveted 1987 300TD.

The good:

Engine runs great. Starts right up in the cold.
Transmission was rebuilt about 60k miles ago (have paperwork). It shifts nicely. A little firm for my taste until it warms up then it is smooth.
No delam in rear glass.
AC/Heat works
All the windows work.

FWIW the book was stamped up to 55k miles I think with regular dealer maintenance. Have a little paperwork after that, but, not much.
I have done all the following work myself (except for the windshield replacement and exhaust work):

New Bosch glow plugs - $75
New Bosch injectors - $300
New OE trunk seal - $100
New AC Denso compressor - $350
New AC drier - $25
AC vac and recharge - $50
New Safelite front windshield $275
Fresh diesel purge w/ filters - $50
New OE sunroof seal - $80
New OE door front door seals with clips (included but not installed) - $300
New OE rear sway bar bushings and brackets - $30
New OE floor mats - $150
New air filter - $30
New intake manifold gasket - $30
Newish tires - $500 - About 10k miles, came off my 420SEL - Michelin Primacy MXV4's
Alignment - $70
New monovalve repair kit installed plus one more extra NIB - $60

Other work worth noting:

Refresh gauge cluster (paint needles, stock vinyl overlays to gauge faces) - $60
Bosch euro headlights ($300)
Diff oil change
New windshield wipers
New interior lights
Drivers window regulator
Rear window sliding jaws

Okay, the BAD:

As mentioned #14 head. I mention this as "bad" because it's not the desirable one. Far as I know it is in good health. Car does not loose coolant, run hot, does not keep pressure in the upper radiator hose when cold, etc. All indications say this head is still going strong.

Sunroof no worky. In fact the headliner is in the trunk. Motor pulls hard as it almost broke my fingers off when I was fiddling with the transom and pushing the buttons. I think the problem is in the rails. I have had it open a couple times with some severe coaxing, but have kept it shut now for months.

HVAC Blower motor sometimes shuts off when you come to a stop. Pushing the high button with bring it back to life. You can then put it back on auto and the speed adjusts with the temp wheel just fine. So, other than the occasional cut off, it works great. Even if you do not push the high button, it usually comes back by itself within a minute or two.

Rear antenna motor works but it needs a new mast. I got a new antenna seal. I plugged the hole with a golf tee for now.

Rust...3 spots that I have noticed:

1. Front bumper chrome
2. Front driver quarter panel. Small spot in front of wheel well.
3. Under the trunk seal just above the left rear light. Seems like an odd spot.

I have treated all of these spots with rust converter.
There is some damage to the front upper core support. It's a little bent. Car does not appear to have been in an accident. No damage down below or internally. Bumper looks original. I suspect there was some sort of shop accident where someone backed into the car with the hood open or somehow dropped something heavy on it.

In general, the paint is OK. As you can see in the pics, it looks great. It'll pass the 10ft. test with flying colors, but, closer than that you can start to see some imperfections. The trunk lid has a lot of scratches. It looks like maybe this car was parked in a garage for awhile and the trunk lid was used for a shelf. Lots of scratches in the clearcoat like boxes were being slid around on it. The side of the car has light scratches like someone was taking in and out of a driveway for years brushing along some sort of vegetation.

Two cracks in the dash. I had them filled but, you can still see them.
Front drivers seat is ROUGH. Needs new covers or sheepskins at the least.

Passenger seat is not great, but probably workable.

THAT is all I can think of. Want to be as honest as I can. There is still some work that needs to be done. I suspect whoever picks this up will want to do a suspension refresh. It seems a little rough on broken pavement. On smooth pavement, car feels great. Steering is pretty good for 217k miles. I do not feel that there are any safety issues.
I suspect that if the buyer sorts the front seats out, sunroof, and suspension, this car will be amazing for many years and 100's of thousands of miles to come

I am trying to be as honest as I can here. If I missed anything after someone picks it up, I am sorry, sale will be final. Sold as is, no warranty.
I would be happy to include the old US headlights with wipers if you want them.

The ONLY trades I would be interested in: w124 Wagon.
