1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E with 64k miles!
Hello everyone! I recently took in a 1993 500E with 64,682 original miles on the odometer. This is a 2 owner car that was most recently owned by one of the partners in our Mercedes dealership. All services have been completed and the car is a time capsule. I am not going to lie and say that I am an expert on the 500E, but this is definitely the cleanest example I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. This car was already posted on ********* yesterday by a forum member. It looks very nice but the asking price is a bit, um, optimistic at $30k.

x2...it is a pretty optimistic price. Perhaps the market has finally turned for these cars ?
That's quite a profit for the dealership...I can't imagine you guys are really into it for much more than 15-16. Great looking car regardless...it's the best color combo ! |

Could be the owner doesn't really want to sell it, but if that were the case, why advertise it at all? It does look very nice, but current market value is closer to the $20k area.
Hatch has almost the same car (silver 1993, 58kmi, fresh paint, click here) and it's been for sale nearly 2 years now, for ~$25k, and they still haven't sold it. That might give you an idea about the market... |

Rich people do crazy things when they see a vintage benz sitting inside a Mercedes dealer showroom. It would not surprise me at all if they get close to their asking price. My local dealer recently sold a 1995 E320 cabrio with 80k miles for almost 20k. If the buyer would have done a 5 second internet search they would have found many comparable examples at almost half the price.

Oh thanks, now I've gone and wasted an hour reading the adverts on *********!
Sure seems like a lot of money. I was looking at a nice daily driver quality '92 500E in, oh, about 2003 or 2004. About 50K miles, 2 owners, full records, Texas car. About $22K as I recall. I didn't like the color combo (smoke silver over black) so waffled a bit and it sold out from under me. It's hard to imagine a production 4 door saloon car appreciating, even one as interesting as the 124.036. |

I believe the best examples of the 500E/E500 (Condition 1 - 2+ cars with 40,000 miles and below) have already rounded the depreciation curve and are just beginning to head back up. This is definitely a trend in Europe, where far fewer of these cars survived than in the US as a proportion of those sold in each region.
500Es/E500s that are actually SELLING for prices significantly above $25,000 in the US are few and far between, but it does happen for the nicest examples. $30-35K is about the ceiling in the US and I think those tracking actual sales (not asking prices) have only seen a couple or three cars sell in this price range in the past few years. Asking prices in the $25-35K range are fairly common, but actual, documented sales at these levels are quite rare. I would have to agree with Jim and GSXR 100% with regard to their comments on pricing, borne of close market observations. It's too bad that all of the E500Es imported to the North American market were equipped so similarly, and that no special editions were sold (i.e. AMG models, E500 Limited models, etc.). Cheers, Gerry P.S. I agree with the observations on E320 cabriolets. Selling prices for well-maintained, low-mileage examples in the best color combinations have never really gone much BELOW the $20K mark, and this is about what the market is for them now. Personally, I'd be VERY scared to buy an E320 cab below the $15K level. It would have a lot of deferred maintenance. |

What's the comparison to a museum supposed to mean actually ? AFAIK, museums don't sell anything do they? ...except maybe for t-shirts and posters. |

The supply of high quality, low mileage cars is a diminishing supply.
The supply and demand curves intersect at some price point, and the general feeling is that that intersection is trending up, not down. As one of the B-J auction house principals said: "You can never pay too much for a car. You can, however, buy it too soon." Jim Regards to grammar, me gets confused about the use of "me" and "I". Is there an easy to remember rule to use for correct usage?
