1977 240D, manual transmission, crank windows, manual HVAC $1500

***UPDATE***

I have put the seats, AC box, dashboard, cluster, carpets and such back into the car. I still have the heater box and center console out.

Ran the car down the road since the seals probably needed to see some oil.

The car is still for sale and is comfortably drivable at the moment.

***UPDATE***

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/ant/cto/3685620275.html

My girlfriend wants to sell her 240D.

I'm currently at a midpoint in a mild restoration on the car.

Photos of various things done to the car can be seen here: http://s666.beta.photobucket.com/user/JoshuaWray1/library/240D

I have many new parts to go in it like:
-New carpet
-New shifter bushings
-New evaporator
-New receiver drier
-Tons of Dynamat
-New firewall grommets
-New trunk trim
-Used uncracked dashboard

There are many new items on the car:
-New tires
-New A/C compressor
-New windshield
-New battery tray
-New battery
-New-ish timing chain (12k miles ago)
-New-ish front steering linkages
-Replacement Getrag 4-spd transmission.

This is a project in the works, but the car will run and drive just fine (without a dashboard, center console and HVAC system which is currently being cleaned out).

Everything goes, (including old parts) I've retained are here and will be sold along with the car.

Hi. Your link above is a bit odd. It took me to CL screen where it appeared that I could edit and change your ad. I have never seen that before. But you should probably change it.

Can you post pictures of the interior in its current state? I know you mentioned it is drivable in its current state but would it make a cross country trip?

I can put the dashboard, cluster and steering wheel back in easily enough. The center console, dashboard, instrument cluster, HAVC, are all out.

There are three holes for the heater lines that I would tape shut for a long drive. The heater hose is looped back to the block at the moment.

This is all I have for now. The seats just need bolted down & belt connectors too, but the headliner, door cards, and all the back seat and such are still in the car. Drop the carpets in and it would be a bit more liveable.

God this is so tempting. Especially considering the never ending saga of rust I'm battling on mine! A solid platform to build on!

Just some questions that I've been fielding lately to a potential local buyer. Thought that I would share.

1) Yes, I have all the original hardware, plus new OEM bits to put everything back together.
2) The original dashboard is cracked, but I did procure an uncracked used one to be installed in it's place at considerable cost.
3) Early in the car's life, before my girlfriend bought it, the engine was replaced at a MB dealership with a MB replacement engine. I cannot speculate as to why this happened. I only know what did happen.
4) the transmission must have been replaced at the same time as the engine. When we procured the car, the jack shaft bearing in the transmission was growling a bit, so I sourced a good used replacement from Silver Star recycling.
5) We do not have the original engine, but I have kept the transmission from the swap.
6) There are a few dings and dents. I did have to attack a (hand-sized) rust spot just forward of the gas door, but it is now in white primer. There are a few chips here and there (around wheel arches and hood corner and some road pitting). The paint needs deoxidation and polishing, paint on these cars is very thick and does polish well.

New items include:
Windshield & OEM seal
Tires
Timing chain 10k miles ago
Valve adjustment 1k miles ago or less
New AC compressor (Sanden retrofit installed)
New AC evaporator (not installed)
New firewall grommets (not installed)
New HVAC seals (not installed)
New knob for fan/AC (not installed)
New slider knob (not installed)
New carpets (not installed)
New door lock diaphragms (not installed)
New air vent flap diaphragm (not installed)
New hardware & diaphragm for fuel door lock (not installed)
New trim for trunk (not installed)
New retention clips for headliner trim (not installed)
New Interstate Battery
New aux fan
New fuel sender
New radiator
New heater core (not installed)
Used outside temp sensor/cluster

Retained items include:
Old transmission (good for core or rebuild)
Old York AC compressor (good for core or rebuild)
Old aux fan (good for core or rebuild)
Old fuel sender

I even have a NOS emergency triangle in the trunk lid and an extra retainer clip for it.

I also have many maintenance consumables (i.e. filters, valve cover gaskets, etc.) that go with the car.

I will also throw in any w123 specific tools (valve adjustment wrenches) that I have.

I don't know of any reason why it would not. Valves were adjusted less than 1k ago and the timing chain was changed less than 10k ago. The cooling system is in tip top shape and all the fluids were done in the last 1k miles. She has new tires and is a good runner.

The only annoying thing is the brake indicator in the cluster. I have the new switch that mounts on top of the parking brake pedal, but have yet to install it.

Thanks,

I do so wish that this car will go to someone who will treasure it and have time to use all the restoration items that I have with it.

I guess that I should post a new interior photo to show it's current condition.

Yes please do. Many others like myself are considering a fly and drive.

Agreed. I have a pile of rust buckets right now and I'm trying to make the case to the wife to let me buy a CA car for cash and drive it back and part out the rest of my less fortunate cars. Pictures help me make the sale man!
