I purchased the car in 2004 it had 312K on it, the engine and transmission is strong, have not had any head work (adj valves regularly), not needed. trans has had regular flush/filter changes. (torque converter too)

Values are all over the map for these cars. Some like Edmunds and KBB do not even go back that far. NADA has these ranging from $5900-$9500...lol...wth??.. good luck.... Auto trader has some listed from $4900-$6900. Ebay had a few about the same. I do not really know what it is worth in the open market, I guess it depends on buyer. You will not insult me with your opinon of value. Please share. Thank You.

Looks like you have loved this car and it shows. The seats are not from a 1990 W126 though, in 89 they got the Gen II seats which are a different pattern than the ones in your car. The seats in your car are Gen I 88 and prior. Even though you have poured alot of money and time into the car it still has high miles. I would say the value is anywhere between 4-5k.

Keep it!

Hi Houston, I think your are in the area with $4000-$5000, I want to keep it but I have two other vehicles, not going to just give it away, I put blood seeat, tears and love, allot of time at junk yards, ebay, ect.

Seats are from an early 420sel, seat springs on fronts both have passenger springs of the new reinforced type. I had a time soldering the power seat plugs, they were not plug and play, had to study two separate wiring diagrams, thenm trial and error.

Car rides so good on the highway, with these seats/springs, new suspension components and Michilin Primarcy tires. I have a spare 2:88 rear diff I thought about putting in also to bring down the rpms.

1984 300 SD

Houston,

You seem knowledgeable about cars. Please tell me what you think about this. I'm looking at a 1984 300 SD Turbo Diesel. The exterior is solid but the interior--dashboard, rear window motors, drive seat belt, console fixtures, and door looks and fixtures need to be replaced. Add to this, the odometer quit at lets say 97000. The car drives strong but I don't know the mileage.

The guy is asking $2,000 for it, and he says he has more than that in it. I know you aren't looking at the car, but what do you think about the price, given the problems I note?

Difference is my interior is almost perfect. The seats, zebrano wood, door panels, console, ect... easily add up to another $2000 assuming you can still find these parts in the crush yards, ebay or dealer.

Miles are nothing for these engines..they are tanks, can take 500k or more.

NC RUST FREE Car

Well maintained, restored and many upgrades. I have owned this car since 2004. Odometer at that time was 312,202. I have put about 38,000 miles since then. I have a folder as thick as a phone book on all that has been spent and done on this car. Most all of the work was done by me using the OE shop manuals and MB tools. I know every inch of this car. Rust free but for good measure used POR-15 on all suspected rust areas. This car has been in NC all its life. So much has been done and spent and have all reciepts to prove it. Front and rear-complete suspension rebuild, A/C works well and has R12, so many interior upgrades, Sony CD/MP3 player, new speakers, Bosch glass European headlights, much much more, I have spent countless hours in junk yards and ebay finding parts to restore this car. Nice car and rides so good on the highway. Decent gas mileage with the diesel engine. Miles showing are 353k, But miles are nothing on this cast iron tank of an engine since it has been well maintained.

New Parts

Engine mounts/shocks, transmission mount, shifter bushings, oil cooler lines, turbo drain line seals, exhaust hangers, steering damper, idle arm kit, guide rod balls joints, brake supports, guide rod bearing brackets, subframe bushings, rebuilt vacuum pump, inside/outside window brushes, window channels/runs, door checks, window gaskets, weatherstrip seals, engine shut off valves, lower ball joints, upper control arms, sway bar links/bushings, monovalve, heavy duty sliding window jaws, horn contact brushes, cruise control lever, combination lever, differential mount, sunroof seals, voltage regulator, ets, blower motor, condenser, a/c manifiold hoses, expansion valve, receiver/dryer, programa acc control unit, drive shaft flex disc, center support bracket, power steering hoses, AT cooler hoses, ignition switch, trailing arm bushings, coil spring pads, Bilstein comfort shocks, control arm bushings, strut rods, tie rods, center link, steering damper shock, idler arm, master cylinder, brake hoses, hood pad, cruise amp, 4-Michelin Primarcy MXV4 205/65/15 (the best tires for comfort)

Upgrades

Bosch euro headlights, euro orange turn signal lenses, added 3rd brake light (rare), recondition/ upgrade all door panels, upgrade arm rest, seals, zebrano wood, recondition bumpers/molding, legal rear window tint, 15” OE MB wheels, zebrano console box, Sony CD/MP3 player, 4 Pioneer speakers, monster cable speaker wire, rear deck lid without turbo diesel (have other deck lid also), Leather seat backs (instead of the ugly mesh) seats; swap rebuild/recondition from 89, passenger seat springs, rear seat headrest (rare), door moldings.

On Jul-03-13 at 22:25:38 PDT, seller added the following information:
Spare Parts; I have allot of extra parts for this W126 like 2:88 differential, flex exhaust pipe, trunk lid, radiator, turbo, much more.

Video?

I understand you've invested a lot in this car and maintained it nicely, but given that the engine has some high miles, would you be willing to post a video of a cold start and perhaps it idling at operating temperature? Maybe also an elementary oil-cap blow-by test as well?

I would be; I understand the cold start and idle video. Can you tell me how to do the oil cap blow by test and what video format to use to post here.

Thanks for your help

Yeah, oil cap blow by ... just unscrew the oil cap while the engine is idling at operating temperature and then set the cap back on the oil filler hole but don't screw it back in. The amount of smoke and pressure in the crankcase passing through the filler hole is a decent (its' not a compression test) read of blow-by/engine strength etc., as long as the valves have been regularly adjusted. Also, do you have any under-hood pics?
