No, not mine!

I just spoke to a friend who has one for sale.

79 300SD, "pale yellow" ( he's not sure of the correct color name, and I'm not either), palomino interior, says it's got "high miles", but he says it is in great shape and very well cared for.

He is co-owner of a reputable independent shop here in Atlanta where I have taken my car a number of times, so if he says it's nice, I'm inclined to beleive him.

$4,500, which I'm sure is negotiable.

OK, I got the scoop on this car. It's a VERY nice SD...I WISH my SD was as mechanically sound as this one. I went to see it this morning and took some photos (see below), and checked it out.

I started it cold (I didn't tell them I was coming, so I could try a true cold start), outside temp. was about 50 degrees F, and it started right up after glowing for just a few seconds. A light mist of gray/blue smoke, which went away after it warmed up. Idles very smoothly. Key felt very solid in the tumbler. It has a block heater installed (see photo).

I drove for about 15 minutes or so, and it handles and steers very solid. Some suspension work was recently done (which he has documents for), and the transmission shifts right on the money, much better than mine! AC blows cold, with a new compressor (also documented), and heat works, pushbuttons all do what they're supposed to. Central locks work. All windows work, but the rear driver's side is a little slow. Sunroof did NOT open, but I think it's a bad switch--it stuck in the "on" position when I pushed it, but nothing happened. All guages seem to work fine, even the tachometer, if you can beleive it! Brakes were good. Fuel filters looked fresh, as well as the return lines. Fluid levels were good. Forgot to check the stereo.

Drove it up to about 60 mph, drove straight, no vibrations. A little smoke if you floor the pedal, but not much. Forgot to test the cruise control.

Interior is very good. Palomino. No tears in the seats, the pads are good and firm, carpet is good, no rips or holes. The carpet piece over the driveshaft tunnel in the backseat area is missing for some reason. A couple of minor cracks in the dash, the wood looks VERY good, I saw no cracks on the dash wood, a couple of small ones on the ACC control area, and one or two by the gearshifter. I tried to get some good angles on the interior, so I'll post all of those pix for you. It needs a good general cleaning and detailing inside and out...it's a bit dusty looking because it's been sitting outside the shop for a while, but in great shape.

The bodywork is very smooth. I think the paint is original, with the possible exception of the doors on the driver's side. They look like they may have been resprayed, but the color match is pretty good--it's looks kind of off in one or two of the photos, but it did not look at all obvious in person. Chrome is good, with some of the usual haziness around the window trim. The front bumper has a few small dents on top, in the center area...kind of strange, don't know what would have caused them. After several walks around the car, I noticed a small rust spot on the quarter panel, very low, starting behind the rear wheel, pass. side. Not large at all. This was the only rust I saw. Checked under the floormats..no visible rust...a little moisture in the driver's side floor...probably needs a windshield seal. Also a little musty in the trunk, probably needs a seal for the rear window too.

Still has the first aid kit! A nice touch. Also has the hazard triangle mounted in the trunk lid, which I though only Euro cars had Maybe someone bought one and added it. Anyway...wish I had one! Also has a pass. side rear view mirror, which is also unusual.

Tires looked good, no uneven wear. Alloy wheels.

He has pretty extensive service and repair documentation, much of the early service was at a dealer here in
Atlanta...Recently, a couple of oil leaks were fixed, new timing chain, new turbo, new AC compressor, front end work, rebuilt injection pump, etc. I looked at a pretty thick stack of documents...can't remember it all.

316,000 miles on the odometer, but it sure does not run like it or look like it. I WANT IT! Actually, my girlfriend and I just discussed maybe trying to buy it, but if one of you guys beats us to it, I won't be offended....much.

I have no vested interest in the sale of this car...It's just a friend of mine selling it, and I wanted to let you guys know about what seems to be a very nice SD. He says $4,500...which I would imagine is negotiable. With a good cleaning and a couple of "nickel and dime" items replaced, this car will look GREAT.
