So how many Wisconsin winters do you figure it saw before moving to the deep south? Does the diesel talk with a drawl now? Went through the ad a couple times and looked at the pics, which I must admit, show it to be a very decent example. To the right person, for the right price....

My thoughts exactly, I think bsmuwk was the seller??? Was a really nice looking car and I think he let it go fairly cheap...

Those even look like the same photos bsmuwk originally used (snow on the ground and Wisconsin tags).

gatorblue92 07-02-2014 06:03 AM

Same car.

Hogweed 07-02-2014 09:42 AM

i was in chicago waiting 3 hrs for a train and i was talking to him from his clist ad....he was going to sell me the car for cheap but i didn't have my license on me and i didn't want to run the risk of driving back to pa like that. he ended up putting it on ebay and getting a bunch more $$ for it there

if that is true then it wasn't purchased from the orig owner by the current owner....bsmuwk had some paperwork from a doctor who was possibly the oo

Sorry guys it took me So long to Reply we had a huge storm here and it took out my Lines >
Anyway back to the Car its Verry Possible the other owner Was a Dr. Dentist But there was another Owner If you can call them that it was the Actual Benz Service Car for The Mercedes Benz Company it Self as far as how many Salt winters its seen i cant speculate but ill Say the Rust is a Very MINIMAL AMOUNT the worst spots are the ones Shown it has a Bubble here and there around the windows on one side but fractional amounts the underside is in Great Shape these were the pics from Allen the guy i got the car from in March this past winter. I bought this Car And im Still in love with it Runs Perfect And Drives Great Its had Trove Of Upgrades maintenance This Car IMO is worth every bit of 7k I am not Going to Sell it Cheap So if your Looking For that then im Truly Sorry i Will not sell it. If your Truly interested in this Fine Car hit me with a Serious Offer under 7k Thanks And again sorry for not getting back to you guys Sooner

We sort of look out for each other here when someone new puts up a car for a relatively high price and calls it a cream puff. If the car truly warrants a premium price such as what you seek, then it should be able to withstand heightened scrutiny.

With that is mind, here are a few initial questions that come to mind based on your photographs and description:

Can you list out a few of the trove of upgrades? And I mean besides the radio, the >90 upgrade ashtray, and the fancy air filter.

I might take issue with your characterization of rust issues a minimal if you are judging them only from outward appearances. Can you describe the extent to which you have explored the depth of the rust? For example, have you ever had the car on a lift? It that rust at the bottom of the front passenger door? Also, is that rust working through the white pain on the same door in the picture of the rusted jack port?

When the car was repainted, do you know if it was repainted over any rust repair?

And if you have had the car on a lift, can you please also explain when the exhaust is routed with an aftermarket muffler out the wrong side of the rear end? Do you view that system as superior to the original?

Do you know for how long the improper coolant has been used in the engine?

Do you know why the washer fluid motor for the headlight washers has been removed and the grommet plugged? Are the headlight wipers still plugged in?

Do you know why the SLS fluid is low? It appears to be an older configuration (< F039532). Is there a leak in the system? Does the rear maintain level under a load? Have you tested it? Are the accumulators holding their nitrogen charge?

Do the cracks in the right headlight/fog light cover go all the way through? Has there been any moisture exposure on the fog light reflector?

Does the fuel tank low level light work? If so, at what level does it come on? And why isn't on in your picture of the instrument cluster with the engine running?

Why is the driver's door key slot painted unlike the passenger side door? Is the lock functioning properly? Does it use the same key as the ignition, passenger door, and rear hatch?

I'm sure I'll come up with a few more.

1): The cracked front bumper.
2): The impact strip on the rear bumper.
3): Large rust spot on the front left fender. Not including the other mentionable large rust.
4): Wrong coolant
5): Cracked Dash
6): Sunbaked instrument cluster needles.

I feel that selling this car at that price would be verging on criminal. No more than $2500.00 at best. I have a feeling he purchased this car overpriced and is trying to make a dollar back. The car would have to be much nicer to ask that price.

If this car is still anything like it was when I sold it - I'll help you guys out here. Only reason for me selling this car was to buy a couple 5 speed 300E's and a cherry 350SD. The fact that I've had 3 other 87 diesel wagons before this one made the decision to sell easier.

Quick run down of car from memory - 1st private owner was a dentist around the Madison, WI area and used the car to drive to his practice. Drove the car from purchase to around 2001. 2nd owner was a bar owner in the Janesville, WI that used it similarly, to drive to work. No expense was spared in the repair and maintenance of the car - I had a huge stack of records with AC service, suspension work, turbo rebuild, etc etc. He's still using my pictures - so I don't know how the car looks now.

As far as I left it, that was it.[ Factory airbox assembly was included, cone filter was on for a few days while I blocked off the EGR and the little flapper box underneath.

I may have some pictures deep in my computer of the underside of the car, don't hold your breath though. The suspension and all nooks and crannies on the underside were all clean and in great shape for a lifetime midwest car. Surprised the hell out of me when I went to change the rear hub carrier bushings. As far as you see in terms of rust, that was it.

When the car was repainted, do you know if it was repainted over any rust repair?

Car never had any rust repair - what you're seeing in terms of rust, is what you get. If I were have to kept the car any longer, it would've been fixed. The rust you see is strictly cosmetic. There is no structural rust anywhere on the car.

And if you have had the car on a lift, can you please also explain when the exhaust is routed with an aftermarket muffler out the wrong side of the rear end? Do you view that system as superior to the original?

Owner prior to me didn't know about the factory recall for the trap ox and was screwed out of a new factory exhaust for the car. If one would literally throw the trap ox back on the car and take it into a dealer it would all be taken care of. The car's VIN doesn't come back as having the trap ox serviced.

Do you know for how long the improper coolant has been used in the engine?

Was in there while I had it too.

Do you know why the washer fluid motor for the headlight washers has been removed and the grommet plugged? Are the headlight wipers still plugged in?

Was like this while I had it as well - wipers work. I believe it was plugged because the motor sprung a leak. BTDT before. I don't remember if I included a spare washer motor though.

Do you know why the SLS fluid is low? It appears to be an older configuration (< F039532). Is there a leak in the system? Does the rear maintain level under a load? Have you tested it? Are the accumulators holding their nitrogen charge?

No leaks and worked perfectly under my ownership.

Do the cracks in the right headlight/fog light cover go all the way through? Has there been any moisture exposure on the fog light reflector?

Not in my ownership. Reflectors are all clean and there was no condensation in the headlights, ever. Besides, the car screams for euro headlights.

Does the fuel tank low level light work? If so, at what level does it come on? And why isn't on in your picture of the instrument cluster with the engine running?

It does, came on right after I took that picture. IIRC, came on with like 2 gallons left.

Why is the driver's door key slot painted unlike the passenger side door? Is the lock functioning properly? Does it use the same key as the ignition, passenger door, and rear hatch?

Key was the same all throughout the car.

I'm sure I'll come up with a few more.

Hogweed 07-30-2014 08:48 AM

first-you should go back and change your original post that claims you're the 2nd owner. you're at least #4
second-the 'speculative talk' is directly related to the asking price; if you were selling this as a good daily driver w/ some positive work done, and pricing it accordingly, there would be little to no commentary. the fact that you paid under $4k, drove it for 10,000 miles, did nothing to it and think it's now somehow worth that much more invites commentary.
third-if you think you know the value better than the guys on this forum then i feel for you. the only place you stand a chance of getting close to those numbers would be ebay. we're not trying to be jerks, just protecting the forum and helping you not waste your time
