FS: 1987 300D in MD
For sale is my 1987 300D. It's "Brilliant Silver" over Burgundy MB-Tex. I bought the car from the 3rd owner in Annapolis, MD. It's been a MD car since new, so rust is very minimal. The owner's wife had backed into the car with their Suburban. The tow hitch broke the grill, bumper and punched a hole in the radiator and condenser. Luckily the hood and fenders weren't damaged, so no paint work was needed. I installed a used bumper and grill and a new radiator. I sourced a used condenser but didn't install it yet. I've put about 8,000 trouble free miles on it. It's been a great runabout car for us. I recently made a 100 mile round trip to D.C. and back without any issue.
Engine / Transmission: The OM603 runs strong and cool. The coldest I've started it was about 8 degrees and it started right up with one glow plug cycle. Original #14 head is holding fine. The ALDA is removed (I have it bagged and can reinstall if desired) so it's especially strong off the line. I've only ever run good quality diesel fuel with Power Service conditioner. The transmission shifts very smooth and has an "Original Mercedes-Benz" part number placard, so I assume it's been replaced at some point. New parts and maintenance items below: * Mobil 1 Tubro Diesel Truck + Mann filter and o-rings * New delivery valve seals * New Mann primary and secondary filter * New fuel tank strainer. I removed tank to replace the strainer and to see if there was any microbial growth. The tank was spotless inside. * New Mann air filter * 6 New bosh glow plugs, pre chambers reamed * New power steering filter * New radiator * New Wahler thermostat * New coolant * ALDA removed * EGR blocked off with a steel plate sandwiched between two pieces of copper. It looks absolutely factory and it reversible in minuets. * ELR(ELR? the big air flap under the air box) is removed and replaced with a straight pipe. I saved all the parts to revert to original. Connectors are bagged. * I degreased the inside of the intake and connector pipe during the glow plug replacement. * New intake gasket * W210 16" wheels with good Bridgestone tires (I have a gorgeous set of OEM 15" wheel that I refinished a couple years ago that can be negotiated into the sale, plus the 14" C-Class wheels in the first couple pictures) * Depo euro lights with Silver Star bulbs. I used the tail light plug to connect them so there aren't any splices in the wiring. * Brake fluid flush with Synthetic DOT 4 Body / Misc: The paint is mostly original and checked as old Mercedes do. It's a "10 footer", looks good from a distance, but up close there are many paint body flaws. The hood, right front fender and drivers rear quarter were repainted at one point. There is a spot of surface rust on the passenger door behind the mid trim. The doors and fenders are rust free otherwise. The jack point are cleanThe front and rear bumpers have a couple chunks of plastic missing. All 4 windows work correctly. The sun roof does not work. The heat works great and the auto function modulates the blower fan correctly. The blower motor does squeal at low speeds, so that should be replaced. The AC obviously doesn't work since the condenser is removed. The radio is not wired. I have two correct Beckers, but the PO cut the plugs off the car for an aftermarket head unit, so those will need to be sourced to get back to factory. The interior is very clean. I pulled the seats out to clean the carpets throughly. The drivers seat does have a broken spring but is still comfortable to sit in. The MB-Tex is cracked in a few places on the drivers seat as well. The PO claimed that he had a euro sport line spring installed. The car sits a lot lower than any other 124 I've seen and handles really well. I bought the car with 255,000 miles and on the first fill up I reset the trip counter and the odometer quit working after that. I replaced the speedometer/odometer assembly with one that reads 222,000 miles, so actual mileage is probably closer to 263,000 Price: $2,000 OBO Location: Cove Point MD (20657) Contact: Drew, randrewferry@hotmail.com OR 724-261-8150, call or text. As I bought the car: Damaged parts removed: Depo Euro lights installed: Photos from mid January: Pictures from 31 March 2015 after a spring detail: Last edited by citationtech; 04-20-2015 at 09:55 AM. |

I'd be really interested in buying this if it's available in the next month or so. I just have too many cars right now (they aren't all in my signature) and I'd be freeing up some space by then.
I'd be driving it for only a year or so, but I'd love to have one of these again to drive around in. The price is awesome. That's what I payed for my last 87 Smoke Silver/Burgundy 300D.

I'm stunned that there are so many W124 Diesel cars for sale and none are selling.

It's very weird times for diesel Mercs. I'm stunned at how w210 diesels have dipped into the low $3k range. I also cannot believe one of us hasn't snatched up the '87 300TD wagon for $1,500 a few threads down. It's a buyers market right now and for some reason they ain't buyin'.

I wonder if part of the reason that the market has slowed down is that diesel is so much more expensive than gas... around here, it's about a 70 cent/gallon difference.

it seems that it is keeping pace with the 20% difference it usually is; rug is 2.59 and diesel is 3.19 (19% more)......when i had my 1990 300se (21 mpg) and 1984 300sd (26-27 mpg) on the road at the same time it usually worked out to be similar in terms of economy but i love the smell of diesel so i would drive the sd most

I would concur that it seems to be a very soft market. W211 drives down W210 prices....which drives down W124...which drives down W123. The exceptions are the really well-cared for cars...the will always sell and for a premium. But average cars are caught up in unforgiving market forces.

Yeah, not a good time for these working-mans cars. I've got two of 'em to sell, one at a time.
Anyway, it is good to see that this one sold, it was a really nice color combo.

Having owned a hand full of 123s, a gorgeous 210 and two 124s I have to say that the 124 was my favorite.
