1986 300d Euro FS: $3,750 Wilmington NC

Yes the time has come, I already have a w123 wagon and bought a sprinter to use for my new daily.

See the thread from the beginning here
this is my "build/resto"

I also posted some other threads about a possible trans leak, and my brake light mod. just search my name on here.

Details below

1986 300d NA 617 M pump
AC (Davia/partially working? )
4 speed Manual (was told it was "Iron Box")
VGC Bunts 14"
MBZ wood shifter handle
Wood trim dash (Add on? )
Black interior virtually Perfect dash!
Euro Cloth in VGC
Euro VGC Bumpers
Euro spec? Manual Sunroof
Euro Glass headlights (one Bosch one Hella, driver's working vacuum adjust)
Taillights seem to be the US spec
AGM battery, new ground
Third Brake Light (original or add on?)

Recent rebuild of cooling system, water pump, OEM thermostat, citrus flush, Zerex g-05 coolant
Dropped and scrubbed fuel tank, replaced all lines and filters
Recently Adjusted valves

ALSO came with
Aftermarket Cruise Control
Welded on trailer hitch with removable ball
Weird little fake chrome plastic trim strips on door and mudguards
two seat covers
Dash Cover
MBZ car cover in Bag
Original made in germany Perrelli spare
Euro Road triangle
VGC First aid kit unused
lots of maintenance records
original books and owners manuals

The bad
very small rust spots
some oil weeps
sag in the rear (one bump spring pads) added "spring helpers"
torn boot
heater core has small leak, steams windshield on heat
Some haze/smoke visible at night in headlights or when very heavy on accelerator (suspect injectors need to be cleaned/serviced due to possible Biofuel and/or deferred maintenance)
Was repainted, took me a few visits to even notice it, looks VERY good from two steps back and I haven't yet done any compounding or polishing to see what is possible.

The Light haze and the heater core are the biggest hassle, but in no way keep it from daily driver status. This car is solid and as cliché as it sounds a great restoration candidate!!

Many more pictures on my build thread and more details, clear title and cash only no trades.....

Thanks,

I see a number of views but not any comments or interest.

I am much more willing to deal/negotiate with a member than the public. I have had some hassles with the folks on Craigslist so by all means let me know if there is interest.

it might be just me but...

kind of a top-dollar price considering whats listed in the 'bad' column...

Personally, I prefer MB-tex & power windows in a car I would consider.

Also, as mentioned elsewhere, tax refund/post-holliday season might be the best time to sell.

A good-looking car otherwise.

Agreed, the car is missing the only valuable part(5 speed)....Still a nice car but there is to many issues to see a price like that.....Granted a lot of work was done, but that is something one will never see back on the sale of a car....

Here is one that still has their 5 speed, that have been up for sale for months....For comparison...

mrercedes diesel 300d 5speed manual rare

I see, I guess I was under that false assumption that this was a more rare car than it is. I searched and searched for comps to price it and couldn't find any Euro 300d for sale within 2000 miles of me (at the time)

Seeing as the direction this thread is going, should I consider a part out? I often see WTB un-cracked Black Dash threads, and Euro Bumpers wanted, and so on.

I realize if I rebuilt the injectors (or cleaned them) and repaired the heater core it would be an easier sell I would listen to offers once there is interest but you know how that goes.

I thank you for the opinions so far.

In all reality you really don't have much money in parts on this car. If you lucky you may get 500$ for the dash "but" this dash was can only be used on NA cars and say from model year 80-82...As the grain changed, as well there is a hole for a idle adjuster which turbo's don't use...

The leaking heater core is a big con, as that requires a full dash removal, there is pictures on my thread in my signature. Also the heater core is NLA, you "might" get lucky and find out it is one of the seals were the feed/return lines plug into the heater core but one doesn't know until they dig in...

Also we have the question as to if that car still has the 38# flywheel or if that was also switched with the transmission. I also then seen there was serve rot in the hood hinge areas..

I see this really as a 1500$ car...sadly...

It may also help to change the year from 1986 to 1985, as the w123 model line stopped in 1985 and I kept clicking on here thinking it was a w124...

Really its a car I would keep as a daily driver, or cut your losses and sell it cheap and move on....

Also euro bumpers and headlights aren't as wanted as one may think...You can get brand new hella lights for 120$ a piece....euro bumpers if rusty have no value, and they also offer no support for people who park via feel...I am on my third bumper and also needs to be replaced again...

W123s continued to be built into 1986, and W124 production started in the 1985. If its a 1986 build car, it is listed appropriately.

rjz5400 10-19-2015 11:24 PM

You sir (dieselPaul) are correct it is a 1986, I assumed the german/European market got w123 models for an "extra" year. Either way it is in fact titled as a 1986 and it is definitely a w123.

I did repair the damaged hood hinge pockets not sure if that was the "sever rot" referred to above.

It seems to me that many of the things I found desirable about this car, the very rarely seen european market options, are the things being picked apart. I LIKE those, short bumpers, hand crank windows, classy fabric seats, ectera... so tomato tomato.

I do appreciate the honest opinions and Ill just see what the interest is out there in the world.

Cloth seats, Euro lights, Euro bumpers, 38# flywheel... those don't count as valuable parts?

I think this car would be worth more than $1500; it's just that finding the right buyer will take a while. Fixing some of the broken stuff in the meantime would help. Wouldn't a heater core from any 240D work in this car?

cooljjay 10-20-2015 12:15 AM

Both of my cars, are titled a year after their manufacturing date...Alot of times euros were even titled later, such as the year they were imported...So don't take to much to heart that it is an 86....Unless you can find the date code on the back of the speedo....but I see that was changed out during import...January 30 1986...I highly doubt the factory assembled this car in less then a month...

It may not be a good idea to link to the thread, from when you bought that car....It does it no favors I might add...

Sever rot is the rot, I heard/seen in the hood hinge area...That is only the tip of the iceberg, now covered with fiber glass. The fender should have been removed to see how far it spread, as I see it coming threw on the fender....

I can go more in depth if you like, after all you wondered why so many views and no comments :P

Euro front/rear bumper sold 350$
Mercedes 123 W123 Front and Rear Euro Bumpers 280CE 300CD 300D 240D RARE | eBay

Complete euro interior, with rear head rests, and no holes....1150$...
Mercedes W123 Euro Seats Fronts Rear Bench Door Panels 75 85 240D 280E 300D | eBay

Is this car still for sale? how bad is the rust?

rjz5400 12-14-2015 09:39 PM

I don't think it was bad at all. The hinges I repaired and there are just a couple of very small spots I know about.

Come inspect it for yourself!! Pm or email.

Nothing like trying to sell a w123 on craigslist, these people really don't know what they are doing. I understand your blight. I agree, I am much more willing to offer my time/negotiate to a member than a CL yahoo.
