AE, I'm seeing these in the $4K area in really decent shape. I think the bottom must've fallen out on the average condition ones. You should be able to find a good one in time. I'll keep an eye out for you.

I cant afford good at the moment. I'll settle for rust free runs and drives without issues and work on de-uglying it... there was a few on here but I believe they are long since sold..

I am constantly watching for these, even more so now that mine got wrecked, and cheap ones aren't rust free. Reasonable mechanical condition is easy, rust is hard.

This is the cheapest rust free one I know of right now: 1987 Mercedes 300TD diesel wagon, #17 head

not a bad price considering the work that was done. if you get it for $5k you'd have a nice car for a long while. one of my favorite color combinations too

Yeah, I've been staring at it for a while now trying to work up the nerve to deal with buying it and getting it back to Michigan

Nice car, probably worth the money, but I have some concerns about some of his accounting etc.

The "dealer head" is a #17, which hasn't been made in over 20years, does his dealer sell used parts?

In the text it says he thinks shocks were replaced "because of its stance", but can't verify. Below it accounts for a new set of rear shocks.

The "repair" prices are nicely inflated, but looking at the photos it is pretty much a running project and has received a lot of used parts as available. Not that this is a bad thing, but it certainly wasn't the cost is no object restoration that the seller implies. Also, as the odometer was "repaired" at one point according to the repair list, how long was it in-op? How many miles are really on this chassis? Not that it really matters, as there are many other factors, but it is quite apparent that it needed many repairs (still does) and was operated by at least one owner without proper maintenance.

Regardless, looks like a nice project, and a lot of the necessary parts have already been acquired and installed. The color is quite unique, didn't even know that was an '87 TD color, about as unusual as the metallic red on this car.

given the cost of that head from the dealer it isn't inconceivable that it sat on the shelf all that time......

I would expect it to be much brighter casting metal in the photos (like in my avatar), ... and I really don't believe that someone would pay that much money for a new head, be mechanically astute, and leave so much un-done.

Not much of a betting man, ...

If it were closer I'd ask if I can see it out of curiosity, love to see it and meet the guy if he really is an enthusiast, but I think it's a guy who knows these cars well enough and has access to lots of used parts (radiator, head, etc.).

I can't imagine driving this car with a hole in the center console, cracked dash, torn pinkamino driver's seat, peeling door pockets, faded hood, etc. and at the same time laying out the long buck for $20k in new parts (or even $10k). Would you install a head without touching the IP timing? Without cleaning up the engine compartment? Did he buy a "new" head and not new injectors and glow-plugs (won't fit)? Or, ... did he install a used head he pulled with all accessories?

Sorry to be cynical, I hope that someone goes to inspect this car and I'm completely off the mark.

Even if all of your pessimism is right I think it is still a decent price as this is the cheapest rust free example I have seen show up since I started following these over a year ago, with the exception of the one I bought.

My solution when mine got wrecked was to either get a W124 320TE or a W126 300SDL (OM603). I went with the SDL because I wanted to stick with diesel. There are plenty of 300SDLs around for a reasonable price without rust. I got mine for $2k out of Ohio. Spent most of its time in Florida.

unfortunately an SDL is not an option. need a wagon, van or small SUV. I carry 1-2 wheel chairs constantly. lifting them in and out of the boot all the time I cant do
