This is a 1987 Mercedes Benz 300 SDL Turbo Diesel
It has 202,000 Miles
Interior in very good shape
All Power seats work including electric head rests
Car runs and drives great
No hard starting car fires right off no smoke
Under the hood is very clean
Car was well maintained and there are records to show all the way from the first break in oil change all the way up to 190,000 miles
I also have the original Window sticker showing MSRP as well as original spare tire, jack and tools
It looks like majority of cars life was in Florida
There is no rust what so ever underneath

This is priced too high for me but some folks might want to know if the #14 head has been swapped out for a newer head.

I'm planning on being in the Dallas area next month.

(Does anybody know a way to subscribe to a thread without posting in it?)

I am not a dealer, but I have the car on consignment with a close friend who is due to the nature of my employment. I guess that is responsible for the price... I am open to negotiation.

I have enjoyed reading through this forum a great deal and I am actually having second thought about selling the ol'girl. However time is something I don't have much of to spare.

As far as the head goes it is fitted with a #14.
The vehicle has been meticulously maintained with the records to prove it and as far as I know, no past of excessive thermal loading.

Please correct me if I'm mistaken, but the cracking issue is a symptom of excessive thermal stress not purely craftsmanship?

I have been reading about the trap oxidizer which was installed on this model. Could the heat from those units be responsible for the bad reputation the #14 head has developed. Or are most of the reported failures taking place at high mileage, well after removal of the oxidizer?

The #14 head was not a robust enough design, Mercedes revised it to thicken the area above the combustion chamber, twice. Then later revisions also changed the oil/water channels and material thickness toward the front of the head to prevent cross-leak issues that some here believe lead to hydrolock and rod-bending in the 603.97x engines. The #22 casting is the last/latest I believe, I installed one on one of my cars so that I would feel better about running more power, but I have never had a problem with cracking a #14 (including the 300TD, which blew a coolant line before it was a year old under hard acceleration when I was doing some testing).

Another change to the head was to angle the injectors for better combustion, which I believe was incorporated in the #17, if you buy a car with the later revision it is likely that it also has afterglow-rated glowplugs, and probably new lifters etc.

The question whether your car has a #14 head is a valid one however, since this casting is AFAIK the only one known to crack with any frequency. People on this forum and most 603 afficianatos will prefer and put more value on an engine with at least a #17 head.

I see that this for sale posting is your first posting, it seems that you must have recently bought this car? I only ask because you just joined, just listed the car, and I'm curious whether you just bought it and have come to our forum just to flip it. Not a bad thing really, if it's a good car and you're being honest, but if you have a recent or open title people here want to know that you don't really know the car beyond the papers in the glovebox.

I completely understand your sentiments and I have no reason to be dishonest with you good folks. I am new to Mercedes, but not to machines and can tell this one has been well cared for. I have always admired these cars on the road and this one came to me under sudden circumstances ,it's just not the right time for me to keep it.

I'm here to answer any questions you have. I'm not out to make lemonade.
