For Sale: 1987 300TD - Raleigh, NC

It is time to sell one of my babies. If you can get the word out, it would be much appreciated. While it may not be for the MB purist, I think it can be appreciated by many. I get lots of compliments on it every time I take her out.

See all the details and pictures in the CL post here. I tried to cover most things, good and bad. https://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/6300839241.html

While the price is higher than most, I think you will see the uniqueness of it. I have way more in it than that and would be hard pressed to restore/build one for less.

Just Outside of the Raleigh/Chapel Hill area

Thank you Peach Parts and all the members for your help and kindness!

Nice car -- and definitely a good value considering all of the work that you put in!

Super nice car! Glad to see I'm not the only crazy one pouring stupid time and money into a W124. You just about sold me on the H&R springs by the way - I've been planning the proper Sportline springs, but that ride height you have is just perfect.

GLWS!

I wonder if there's a difference in the ride quality Mike between the sportline and H&Rs. They make the car look real good, but ride quality is important if you're driving an MB.

Beautiful car. While the price might seem high I guarantee you could never build one for that price.

OP: do you know what size spring pads you are using with the H&R springs? I'm going with the same setup on my 300TE and yours looks like its setup perfectly.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I really don't want to sell her, but she needs a good home and needs to be shown off more. I just don't have the time anymore to do anything related to cars (which makes me sad )

The suspension is firmer than stock, but is also much more responsive on the road with the lower center of gravity. I had a BMW e46 with sport suspension and 19" wheels and was very firm (nothing like this). She now has a firmer "floaty" MB ride. With the plush leather seats that absorb a lot.

The Spring pads were changed from 23mm front and back, to 8mm. I think it was about a 1.3 to 1.5" drop once they "settled in".

I prefer a pretty firm and controlled ride, generally - the aesthetics are really just secondary. That said, I'm not sure how much I trust these one-size-fits-all, off-the-shelf lowering spring kits. For my BMW I've got really nice Öhlins dampers with custom springs (I selected the spring rates) - with these kits you never really know what you're getting...I'm not sure if H&R releases specs on their springs. The BMW has MacPherson struts in front - the W124 design is quite different, so I'm not sure how much I can compare the two.

Of course, with the Sportline springs, I won't know what rates I'm getting either. But I can use the "points" calculator to get the correct springs for my vehicle (Sportline was available as an option in Europe for the 124.128). The question really is if I will find Mercedes' suspension tuning to be too conservative. I plan to use both front and rear Sportline bars (already sitting in my garage), so theoretically the springs will be a good match, but they're several times more expensive than the H&Rs.

One thing I know for sure is that the current suspension needs an upgrade for sure! I'm tired of the squat, dive, and roll!

SOLD

My baby is sold and gone.
I'll be honest, it was kinda sad watching it drive up into an enclosed trailer and driving away to FL. A lot of time and love went into her for sure. If anyone is keeping track of sale prices or values I sold mine, with multiple interest, for $15,000. That included a extra used #22 head and a many used/new parts.

Thanks again to all of you for your knowledge and help through my build.
Without Peachparts I would still be diagnosing things and scratching my head....or pulling out my hair. LOL!

Until the next Mercedes - Take care

Nice work getting 15k. I have always thought that the more rare cars would begin to go up in value.
