You guys are right, that Sacramento car is worth pursuing. Thanks Reid! I've already called, it's still available.
Are you guys cool with the fact that it comes with zero history? I have been told over and over and over again not to pay big money for a car without a history, that's why I posted in my first post my desire for a history. If you guys are OK with no history, I'll pursue it. I'm calling to get the carfax done now.

I would pursue that other car too if it were local, but the logistics and costs of driving 1,500 miles away, checking out, buying, and then dragging said car back out here are pretty daunting. Plus, since I have to go to Texas (and Colorado) on business anyways, I would have to drive the gas hog Expedition to those other places and conduct my other business first, or else be forced to lug said car and trailer along for the whole trip, or else leave them in Texas, but then I'd have the added expense of having to go back to Texas to get them. If I do my other business first, I might lose out on said car. I would rather ride a train there, check it out, buy it, fix it, drive it to my other destinations, and then drive it back out here, but there are a lot of things that could go wrong along the way with that plan. Plus, lugging tools and parts on the train would be an issue, not to mention the fact that, as Reid already pointed out, there is a very real possibility that there are other things, known or unknown to the current owner, wrong with the car.

I found that Phoenix car too in my searches but never mentioned it here as it seems that that $6,000 to $7,000 price range will buy a decent, nice, lower mile, RUNNING W211 diesel, Bluetec or CDI, that is only three, four, or five years older.

I'll keep you all updated.

Reid, there was a CDI up near you with 500,000 miles on it. Did you see it? I wanted to link the ad here but now I can't find it. Maybe it speaks well to the potential longevity of the CDIs? Where is that ad?!? He couldn't possibly have found a buyer for it, could he?

Also, are you close enough to that Sacramento car for me to be able to take you up on your offer of checking it out? Please? Maybe I could get a down payment up to you before hand so that if it checks out, you can make a deposit on it on my behalf? He has already told me he is willing to pick me up at the train station.

first local 99 300D that shows up is a 227K miler that has new injector lines and those pesky plastic return lines that tend to leak. For $2000 and a paint job it would be a nice car.
I would go that route before buying a car with 500K miles!

No, no, no! I'm still staying with my 150,000 mile limit. I just wanted to link the ad here so that CDI doubters could see that CDIs do apparently have some decent longevity. At least some of them do. Me, I still want the low milers only. I already have a yard full of high milers! Don't need any more!

I'm sorry about the lost PM. I've opened up a few spaces in the mailbox.

OK, I may be able to get him to wait untill Thursday, he seems pretty open to just about anything. I think his high price for a 19 year old mercedes is keeping his phone from ringing. I'll be getting the carfax in about an hour, I will post a brief post about what it says later, and I promised to call him tomorrow with a plan, which at this point is you see him on Thursday and I take a train up there on Saturday, correct?

Thanks again Reid!

i think his high price is acting as craigslist idiot repellent....his comment about working on the price after you see the car makes me think he just wants to weed out the nigerian princes and ship after the bank check clears scammers

I don't have the whole report yet. I'll get it tomorrow. I call it a "carfax" but it's actually one of the outfits that the dealers use. I pay a local dealer $5.00 a pop to do them for me once in a while. He called me back tonight to give me the jist of it. The highlight is that it has a salvage title. Unbelieveable! I'm still not out yet though, but I will definitely be a lot more cautious going forward with this, and I will definitely be less generous with what I offer for the car. Did this seller honestly think that in this day and age there are still people left out there who don't do carfaxes?!? Or maybe my dealer friend is lying to me because he wants me to buy one of his marked up PsOS. Who knows. My imagination is clearly running away with me. It's not like he could fake such a thing, right? I'll see the actual printed report tomorrow. I am on record as not being afraid of salvage title cars, but I don't pay a lot for them either. And I was trying to get a better car this time. The car to end all cars. The car to drive until they pry the keys from my hand.

If this is indeed a salvalge title car, what would you guys do?

400Eric, read Posts 118, 119 and 120 again. Strongly recommend against buying a vehicle with a salvage title.

The question is, was the work done right? does it look good?

The car is approaching 20 years old. Who cares if it has a salvage title. The car was $50k new, it's worth may be $6k on a great day. I'd say they're just about worthless in terms of value. I wouldn't care about a salvage. It's not a split window Corvette. Eric shoot me the vin and I'll confirm whether it was an accident or not. it'll likely tell me severity of damage as well.

Re: w211 Bluetec with failed engine. Could always go the dieselpumpuk route and swap in a superturbo om606. Would be a great fix for most unless you live in a more draconian emissions county / state.

Eric is in SoCal, getting it registered might prove an impossible task.
