You seriously tried to make a comparison between the desirability and demand of gas vs diesel cars.

Every generation of E-Class from the W110 all the way up to the W211 has a serious premium on diesel cars over gas.

Andrew,

A really nice example of a 240D that’s well presented and fairly represented, I believe.

While I’ve never owned a 240D (but a number of other W124 variants) this looks like a really solid, clearly described car. None of the issues you identify are significant, and all easily resolved. This looks like a great example of a “rolling restoration” that the new owner could just tinker with at their leisure or just get in, turn the key, glow, and daily drive the car for another 200-300k.

Considering this I think it’s fairly priced and a good value for whoever ends up with it.

While I have been tempted to acquire a 240D just to have the experience and the notch on my bedpost, so to speak, I fear that the ongoing requirement for AC as a year ‘round resident of Florida makes a 240D rather impractical.

Good luck with the sale, a good luck to the future new owner.

Dan

God bless the owner for giving it away, but I can show you a half dozen W126 300SDs that are actually selling for money right now.

That car has nothing to do with my car that I am selling. Nothing.

Thanks Dan. This car has many many years left in it. The previous owner said the timing chain was as tight as can be when he had the valve cover off for the valve adjustment. I don't have any records of chain work being done, so I am not claiming it has been replaced, but I feel good about it. I have no problem driving it anywhere. Even when I go on the turnpike with the 70mph limit, it has no problem buzzing along at 75mph in the cruising lane.

A/C has been converted but I never played with it because it never really gets super hot here in PA. If it does get really warm, the sunroof and windows keep me sane. If I am traveling, I just take my other cars with A/C.

And then there is a realist, one who does not exhibit symptoms of living in Fantasyland:

I'd say the only cars that qualify as comparison are those within a 300 mile radius of Pittsburg PA. Anything more than a one day drive carries much more overhead. ( $$ + time )

Is Frank willing to personally deliver any car from CA / AZ to the Pittsburg PA area for free? . . .And to add to the overhead, the buyer is free to refuse the car once it gets to PA. This would account for traveling from PA to CA only to find the potential purchase is a mess.
