ps2cho's 1988 300TE For SALE! $2800, lots of photos/details

**new thread -- car is back for sale buyer went quiet**
-See very bottom of thread for changes since last thread

I have owned my 300TE since 2006 and I have spent BIG on this car, it has been WELL taken care of. The sheer level of detail in this for sale posting should speak for itself. This listing is posted honestly and nothing is hidden. Keep in mind this is a 30-yr car now, but for the age and mileage is a fantastic example.

Put it this way, I'd drive this car 1,000mi tomorrow without a second thought. I put 400-500mi a week on her, so out of state buyers don't be afraid!

1988 Mercedes 300TE -- Pearl Grey Metallic
208k miles -- M103 engine, 722.3 Transmission
NO RUST -- CA / AZ car entire life
I purchased at 61k miles in 2006. Extensive maintenance has been documented since then. See below.
Car is located in Phoenix, Arizona.

Asking $2,800, will not ship, I've heard every scam in the book so don't waste your time. Happy to facilitate a PPI (at your cost of course), but I think my posting should give you enough comfort.

If you'd like other Photos, details etc, please feel free to Call/Text/Email/PM me. I’m happy to take closer photos of anything upon request, above or under the car.

Call / Text Robert @ 949-351 eight seven oh six.

Photo's - 30 OF THEM!!
Here are detailed photo's of the vehicle:

Exterior

Interior

Here is my maintenance history:

Pros / Cons Overview:

Pros:

-Extensive history!! Been religious with fluid changes
-NO RUST, NEVER been in an accident.
-Engine strong, minor oil usage ~1qt every 5k, I don't top up in between changes.
-Transmission is SOLID. Rebuilt from Sun Valley Transmissions, not a spec of wear in pan at each fluid change. (thread at bottom for proof) Absolutely NO delay in reverse, shift flaring, anything like that. Shifts fast and hard!
-A/C rebuilt, hoses, compressor, everything but evaporator. No signs of any leaks and its held pressure for over 2 summers now.
-Rear SLS works great, although after a long ride its slightly higher than I think maybe should be, might just be an adjustment at turnbuckle, never bothered me though.
-Rear suspension solid since all arms replaced, including subframe -- getting 50k+ out of tires with no odd wear patterns as shown in photos.
-subtle upgrades include: facelift side cladding, rocker panels, door sills, leather steering wheel, later model dash /w the wood, 500E 16x8 wheels.

Honesty section:

-Paints sun tired on hood and roof, as shown in photos.
-Speedometer wobbles randomly and has a mind of its own every now and again.
-Gas gauge doesn't drop below 1/4...Car always does 19-21mpg, 300 miles per tank. I just fill up at 300mi every time. The low gas light works of course though.
-Alarm module needs replacing (disconnected for now, same issue years ago and module fixed it).
- Sunroof rails are on borrowed time on tilt function
-B2 transmission o-ring seal leak (visual confirmation after cleaning area), very minor. I’m talking only leaks when parked uphill, and a few drops. Checked fluid every few months, and haven’t needed to top up in over a year, that’s how small it is.
-Unknown cause of interior rear lights stuck on, best guess is rear hatch lock, so just removed the bulbs to avoid battery drain
-Tires at 4-5/32". A little left, but getting close. All matching 225/50/16 Continental ExtremeContact DWS (spare tire is NEW Michelin in 2016, never used)
-SLS shock bushings starting to make some noise on harder acceleration / braking.
-Radio antenna motor doesn’t go up/down.
-defrost flap has a mind of its own, opens/closes randomly...I believe its the vacuum bypass unit behind glovebox. The pod is fine though which is the important part.
-Half dozen parking dings, two larger dings, one on passenger fender at top, one on rear corner above rear brake light.

Misc
Can leave/remove subwoofer if you want it or not. The amplifier is under the passenger seats, I never wired under the carpet or anything so no carpet is damaged from it etc.

New spark plugs (Denso T20EPU copper non-resistor).

Photo limit on forums is 30...

Here is a photo of the spark plugs I removed today and replaced with new Denso T20EPU Copper non-resistor plugs...just so you can see engine is running well. These were not cleaned, or touched at all. Straight from engine after 20k miles. Left to right, cylinder 1->6.
The new Sachs front shocks are due in any day now and I will update with a photo of them installed at that time.

will begin tackling the front shocks and B2 o-ring tonight and tomorrow.

I was thinking once done I may create a video walk-over of the car, show the flaws, walk around and discuss all the repairs completed and, start the car show the idle, rev it up,. Etc.

I’ve received a number of east coast inquiries and for those states I think shipping in reality is the best bet because 2,500mi doesn’t even make sense financially between gas and a flight out. Maybe a video would aid in comfort buying unseen.

Stay tuned!

Just wrapped up with the B-2 transmission bore o-ring. Went smoothly. No signs of immediate leaks, but I've parked on an incline as thats when it began weeping before so will check back in 24hrs and see if theres any signs of dampness there.
Trans fluid still bright pink and clean. Drained and refilled the pan, so a good half fluid change complete.

Fresh shocks went in. Old ones were definitely on borrowed time...feels much better now!

Car's still available!! Don't make me sell it on craigslist to someone who won't appreciate the time I've put in the car!

Starting to get really frustrated. This is the third scammer.
Talking with this guy for over a week over the phone. Everything checking out, he's going to fly out from NC since his W123 got totaled in the hurricane...

Then after a week, he emails me saying sorry can't fly out wife says too much damage on house to clean up, OK to ship?
I tell him sure, right after you send me a deposit, and wire full funds. Now all of a sudden he wants to use an auto escrow service and wants a PPI done so he can "check the codes" over with his mechanic.

LOL What codes??? If he really owed a W123 or a W124 he would know there are no codes to check. Scammer, told him to pound sand. Just frustrated I wasted over another week of my time.

Who's NOT going to try and scam me out (which WONT WORK I PROMISE YOU) and take home this wagon???
I'll be doing a full background check on all out of state buyers going forward now. Can't trust anybody even trying to sell on a niche MB forum...insane...

Love this wagon

I was the lucky buyer & my daughter & I drove it home from Phoenix to South Central Virginia. The car has even now experienced it's first snow so I am shopping for new tires.
Frankly, this buy was a steal.

Thanks again to a terrific seller!

I will post pictures in the Spring 2019 once it has been re-painted & new pin stripe is done along with a modest front spoiler modification planned.

Nice score, nice wagon. It seems like ps2cho posted all the work he did to that wagon....
more than just about any vehicle on this forum. Ton of posts for you to reference.

Very cool you got to make the drive with your daughter. She's got to think the old man is pretty cool by now.... if she didn't already. Haha. I just had my '95 E320 wagon painted. Oh yea.....definitely the thing to do with these classics.

RE-SALE

I am considering selling this terrific 1988 300TE I purchased from the original poster months back.
For clarity, I purchased this great W124 back in November 2018.
I flew out to Phoenix and drove the car home to Virginia over a 3.5 day period. It was a perfect drive & the car exceeded expectations.

I am interested in selling because of a few elements, the primary one being that I have bumped into a deal for a certain sedan that I have been chasing for years, but requires shipping from overseas back to the U.S.

I am also going to post a sale for my 1992 Signal Red W124 Sportline sedan.

The cars are in the 23901 zip code of Virginia. Given my upcoming travel I am going to be an aggresive seller.

For this '88 300TE I have replaced the tires with brand new Uniroyal (matching specs as acquired from the P.O.), oil changed & added a brand new engine splash shroud that I purchased.
Otherwise, the original posting herein remains 100% accurate.

Terrific car. My kids are going to give me grief once they learn that I am selling this wagon as it has quickly become a family favorite.

For Sale in Richmond, Virginia region

I am collecting W123 TDTs and given this focus I am going to let this terrific W124 wagon move on & so I am selling it.

$3000 (firm on that selling price).

Brand new tires & aside from the Speedo cable (needs replaced) + the right side/rear passenger door outside handle is not working & now the outside temperature digital read out has gone bad, everything works.

So the issues are:

1. Speedo cable needs replaced
2. Left, rear passenger side outside door handle is not working
3. Outside digital temperature gauge/indicator read out is shot (the rectangular one at the center/bottom of the gauge cluster).

3rd row seat is excellent; we use it a lot for kids.
AC - definitely works as it should.
I do not use the sunroof, but it does work.
