Arrow FS: 1983 240D Automatic - 46,000 Miles

Im trying to help a friend of mine sell his 240D, he's not particularly computer savvy. He is the second owner since the late 90's and he's looking to downsize (I'm trying to snag his rod bender W140 but he won't budge). I couldn't find any rust and it appears to be original paint. He keeps the car covered in the garage and takes it out for a spin occasionally to keep the juices flowing. It has 46,000 miles and rides great. We took it out for a spin - I have some videos. The car is maintained at a MB Diesel specialist in Staten Island, NY - that is also where the car is located.

- Orient Red over Saddle
- A/C (Blows cold)
- Power windows
- Power door locks
- Dual side view mirrors
- Power sunroof
- Factory radio / power antenna
- Alarm
- Pirelli tires

As for the asking price, it's negotiable and in the upper teens and he'd like to be in that range. I know, it's an automatic 240D... but it has low miles and it's in great shape.

If interested in viewing the car feel free to text / email me and I will relay the message.

high teens?

Beautiful car. Beautiful color. AWESOME paint! Looks to be very well maintained...might tell a different tale in person. Amazingly low mileage. A member on here found one very similar, not too long ago, out on the west coast. Paid $3800 for it. This seller is asking "high teens"? IMHO that's a tad unrealistic and that's just my opinion. But, you'll never know if you don't try. The owner has the every right to ask whatever he wants for the car, of course.
If his asking was "in the ballpark", (hell, even on the road that leads to the ball park) a car this nice would already be sold.....jus sayin
Good luck to the seller! Keep us posted. I'm sure a lot of people on this forum would be interested to know what the final selling price will be.
My guess would be somewhere between 10 and 15K......maybe, under the best circumstances, if he finds "his" buyer.
Any other opinions, about the eventual selling price, out there?

Just go straight to Bring a Trailer or eBay, this forum won't get you that kind of money. You'll just get anecdotes about the time someone paid $50 and a set of euro turn signals for a 240D.

If the car is positively stunning and well documented it can bring the money.

I think most people that know these cars well steer way from it from the combination of price---240D/automatic..........but someone who is entering the W123 will entertain it because of condition/miles. Really nice car, just not the right combo. Bring a Trailer is where it belongs...

Can't say I disagree with anyone, it's probably going to be a tough sell. We need to find the right target audience - perhaps a trust fund baby from Williamsburg, Brooklyn? They seem to be gobbling these things up these days.

eBay just seems like a royal PITA, fees this fees that but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try. I'll look into Bring a Trailer.

Maybe the cool lads at Mercedes Motoring?? I'm dying to know what this sold for with higher miles: Mercedes Motoring - 1983 240D Diesel Sedan

Owner: "But Wayne Carini sold one for $XX,XXX.XX"

Thanks!

The question isn't how much you can get for this car... the real question is how do I get the paint on my 81 Orient Red 300d to look this good. Ha ha! Seriously though, this 240D looks incredible.

Best thing you can do for your friend is to take the CL ad down immediately, then go to Bring a Trailer, create an account, and submit it for an auction.

You'll get top dollar for it there and it only costs $99.00 to list it, the buyer pays a fee when it sells. BaT routinely commands top dollar for these and other cars, and the buyers are serious with cash in hand.

This is not an eBay or Craigslist car. You simply won't sell it on either venue, at least not "in the upper teens".

Here is a search on BaT for 240D auctions:

https://bringatrailer.com/search/mercedes+240d/

Study these closely to get an idea of (real) market values. If your buddy is adamant about their price, they're probably going to be owning the car for a long time to come.

I 100% agree with the previous posters. This is a fantastic car but the seller is dreaming if he thinks the "high teens" is where it would sell. It belongs on BaT and if it hammers anywhere north of 12k then the seller should be ecstatic.

BaT all the way. He will probably at least get half what he wants. If he has family in the south. Locate it there as a southern beauty

Bat is flooded now with used car dealers. Also not all deals close as was the case on ebay years ago. Chances still are best there though.

If there is a way to document this car should be presented. For example the factory oil change booklet. Showing the stamped oil changes and dates. Without that a lot of interest will be lost. Many examples have odometer issues. Or when that booklet is missing on claimed lower millage examples does raise questions.
