does om606 swap into 87 or 91 sdl make sense?
Any thoughts / advise on this?
W126 LWB with this Motor? Good idea or Bad idea? Was the OM606 good enough- to make the SDL into a DD? Any major challenges to the swap? |

swap can be done but why? the om 606 turbo in the 98-99 w210 is a better car and even a good one would be 1/2 the cost of the swap and when you're done you have a 30 year old car that dives like a 30 year old car.
or better yet wait for a cheap w211 with an om 648 freakin rocketship

Im just getting acquainted with my 603, but the 606 is the ultimate power upgrade. Power wears on the weakest links first and youll find more weak links the further back in time you attempt to transplant one into. What drives people to take on this task is style of the w126.

This topic may be better suited for Diesel discussion...

If going with om606, then go with turbo version. My om603 is faster than my friend's om606 NA.
Also, bear in mind that 606 glow plug replacement is a job that even professionals loathe. I agree that it's about the style. W210 is so much better, but in my opinion ugly. Ideally I'd love a 560SEC CDI |

i had a 1999 300d and i currently have a '99 e320 and a e320 4matic parts car. i live in Pa and none of these cars had any issues with rust to a significant degree.
i have been after a w211 for a couple years so i've done some checking and driven a few. i just bought the 2005 cdi, and two 2005 e500's (don't ask) and i can attest to the veracity of some of those issues you mention. injector seals are an issue if left unchecked but it's an hour job with $30 worth of parts, provided the BD hasn't started yet. the cdi is fast....not just diesel fast but legit fast. that would be the engine i would use having owned both the om 606 and 648 (all 3 if you count the om603 or 5 if you count the om 616 & 617) the SOS alert started trying to call out the other day so that might suck if it keeps happening but i'm sure it can be figured out.......which is the measure of the question in general: all the chassis/engine combinations have issues and they can all be remediated; add in some more if you're altering the original "line-up", as it were..... i love the w126 body but the tech is old and it drives like a tank compared to the newer cars i've been driving. a guy in canada had a 500sec that he converted with an om617 which i direly wanted a few years back..... Now- with the Help of the community-- shifting some thoughts/looking for 05/06 cdi w211... People here say - as good or better chassis-- due to Newer better tech. I am 6'4"... I know the leg room is there... but car seems like it sits much lower than w126-- I need to find local- one- to drive and see how much I like it versus w126. BUT- yeah w126-- getting old- that is why I was checking out this one... seems like this dude- did ALL the needed Suspension/rubber/hoses/etc. to last-- only questions -- how was this "Junkyard" motor treated in past???? anyway- w211 w/ om648-- Market seems to be suggesting that it IS a stellar motor!!! |

nobody said it can't be done but the question is does it make sense?
for 9 grand you could buy three w210 e300d cars or two w211 cdi's.... Quote:

going to make the attempt
I know this is an older thread.
I just bought a 1986 SDL with a problem motor. Since i wanted to update the motor the om648 + 722.6 seemed like the best choices. Both will have independent computer controls so other than fit and finish i don't see an issue getting the engine in place. looking to track my progress.. I can post info if anyone is interested. and i'm sure 'll get a lot of heat for this.. |
