'79 240D Manual For Sale - CA car - 7500

Hi, Everyone.

I'm selling my 1979 240D. It's a euro-delivery car that was brought to California through Stead motors in Walnut Creek, in the SF East Bay. It remained with its original owners until recently. The car was serviced exclusively by Stead MBZ and I have all known service records (can send you a PDF of the spreadsheet tracking everything from delivery). The 240D has ~270,000 miles, but the engine only has 32,000 - having been replaced by Mercedes-Benz in the 90's due to a stuck valve in the original. Have all documentation / certificates for this factory-authorized swap. As such, the new engine is from a later model year, and has the improved air conditioning compressor (located on the lower driver's side). Still running R12, the A/C and heat work great. Curiously, this later-model engine still retains the early glow plug system, so it takes a little bit longer to pre-glow / cold-start. Clutch was replaced, according to original owner, at the time of the engine swap. There's no chatter, and the transmission is solid in all gears.

I put new tires on it about 200 miles ago, along with four new ATE brake calipers and MBZ pads. It also needed new fuel return hoses, and I flushed the brake system and installed a new clutch cylinder supply hose.

The door seals are in poor shape, as is the trunk seal (a few hundred dollars and a couple hours of time to install). The floor mats are a bit tired after a ¼ million miles. Underbody is completely rust-free, there's some damage to the left rear fender lip, and a ding on the front right fender, along with normal wear & tear. The original paint is beautiful. Front bumper has chrome plating separation on the right 14" of bumper. There is a service record that shows the original owner hit a tire that was on the road, and it caused damage to the bumper, which was straightened, with no body work/damage reported.

All body electrics function, but I haven't tested the rear window defroster, because it never gets cold enough here. There's a block warmer installed in the engine bay, but I haven't tested it.

Have full records from new.

This is a great, solid, car with plenty of life left in it. Please reach out for more photos, specific questions, or to schedule a test drive! Car is ready to go in Orinda, CA 94563. Asking 7,500.

240D has been sold

The 240D was sold in December 2019. For some reason, I cannot modify or delete the original ad.

Nice. How much did you get for it if you don't mind? I'm curious what the market is. I have a 1982 manual 240D with blown engine but beautiful body and interior and manual sunroof. I'm looking forward to dropping the engine in and driving it.

Hey Biopete - i decided not to go the bring a trailer route on this one, which could have fetched more money (or less), so I listed it for 7500 locally on Craigslist. Sold for 6500.00 a week later. I bought the car for 500.00 and put about 1400.00 more into it, so I’m happy with the transaction.

Nice! Congrats. I'd be very happy with that. I don't think i ever made any money like that -- if any off a w123. Lol.

I bought my 240D for 500.00 too with blown engine a couple years ago and i got an engine from Jim on here I had lying around so i bought the car because i had the engine. It may be a keeper.
