Anyone need a carfax report? $16.

I was in the market for a E-320 wagon recently and decided to purchase the 3-pack of Carfax reports. But I only needed one, so I have two more which I could run if someone has a need. A single report runs $40, but the 3-pack reduces the price to $20 each ($60 total).

Anyway, to make this somewhat attractive, I would be willing to run a Carfax report for you for $16. Payment would be through Paypal. Please PM me if you have any interest, the VIN in question, and your normal email address. I will then send you my paypal email address, and when I receive payment, I send you a pdf of the report via email.

As an aside, I used my one report for a 2003 wagon, and it was really helpful to see all of the services and even what specific problems the car has had previously. Let me know if I can help anyone out.

There are resources out there where people can get NMVTIS report for around $5-10 already. https://www.vehiclehistory.gov

So if anyone wants an even cheaper alternative to carfax, I suggest going there I see no advantage to carfax over any of the ones on the vehiclehistory.gov website since they all get their data from the NMVTIS database.

According to the NMVTIS, "NMVTIS serves as a repository of information related to vehicles that have been in the possession of auto recyclers, junk yards and salvage yards."

Do you know for a fact that you can get maintenance history for a car via NMVTIS? I was able to figure out when every oil change and tranny fluid change and brake fluid change occurred on my "new" 2003 E320 via carfax. If NMVTIS does all this, then yes, I guess I got ripped off. I looked into this ahead of time, and am pretty sure (but obviously not 100% sure) that carfax provides quite bit of information beyond the NMVTIS.

But if I am wrong, it won't be the first time. Anyone know for sure?

As an aside, there is one report still available.

Yes, I still have one report remaining. I sent you an email, so let's just communicate further directly. Thanks.

Carfax won't report any of those "oil changes" and such unless the car is dealer serviced. Joe's garage on the street corner won't report to carfax, nor will owner-maintanence show up on a carfax. It is also a waste of money for any of those buying classic cars because there are cheaper resources that will give the same information.

Unless you're buying a relatively new car (within the past 10-15 years) or have ZERO mechanical skills, at best, a carfax is only a supplement to a proper-pre-purchase inspection. All the carfax is good for is pointing out # of owners, REPORTED accidents, etc, and this information can be obtained quite cheaply through any of the NMVTIS websites for much less. Carfax won't show unreported accident/collision damage.

There is no report that will give a prospective buyer all the info other than an extensive PPI, preferably done by a mechanic who is expert in the specific model you're looking to buy.

Upod-
I don't remember saying that a carfax report is better than a hands-on inspection. Of course it is a supplement to an inspection. A $16 supplement, which the price of a meal at the deli across the street from me. It is not clear to me why you are working so hard (with factually incorrect information) to keep me from making back a few bucks on my $60 purchase.

In contrast to your claims, here are some facts...the Carfax report for my 2003 (17 years old) had every service for my car reported at the following types of places:
Mercedes Benz Dealers
Sears Tire Centers
California Inspection Stations (smog checks)
Several independent repair shops (the "Joe's Garage" that you mentioned)

So its utility is quite a bit larger than you claim. I never claimed it was perfect. I never advised anyone to purchase a car without an inspection. Clearly folks out there purchase carfax reports for the normal $40 or Carfax wouldn't be in business. So here I am offering a pretty good information tool for less than half the normal price.

As previously mentioned, one report is still available.
