1992 Mercedes Benz 300D 2.5 Memphis, Tennessee

Dear fellow members,

I am posting a w124 1992 300d 2.5 for sale for an 80-year-old widow who is moving out of state to live with her son. She is the original owner, and it has been serviced at the dealer and by an independent Mercedes shop here in Memphis. The car has never been in an accident. It is a 702 Smoke Silver with a palomino interior. Car has 148,563 original miles on a working odometer. The interior is in great shape but does have minor headliner issues that are common to w124s, but wood and MB-Tex, dash and floors are extremely clean for a 29-year-old car. The car has been garaged since new, and paint is in decent shape. Paint does have the typical defects of a 29year old car, but there is no clear coat failure and is certainly above average. Bridgestone tires, while not new, have plenty of tread life and I do not see any cracking. The 602 engine is extremely clean with no signs of oil leaks or turbo problems. Transmission is crisp and shifts through all the gears well.
All being said, I believe that this would make for an excellent daily driver for someone looking for a dependable, well cared vehicle that has a lot of life left in it. it would also make a great car for a young driver/college student due to the weight and safety it provides. The lady is asking $8000 for the car, but is willing to look at a serious reasonable offer. I would purchase the car myself, but I am car poor as it is! Please call Tom at (901) 857-2338 for more information/pictures. Please call as I am not on this site daily. Car is located in Memphis, Tennessee.

Any more pictures than just that one? Interior, engine, underside?

My poor 1990 300d just got totaled (rear-ended), so am potentially interested.

Spoke with owner who is now relocated to Maui from Memphis.(Lucky lady!) Anyway, she is willing to lower the price down to $6,500 or best offer. Please give it some thought as I think it would make someone a really nice car and definitely should have lots of life in it. I'm not the owner and since I'm housing it, would really like to get it sold. Got tons of pictures and history on the car. Thanks!

Bump

Guys and Dolls, I don't own this car, so I don't have a say in the price. That being said, this is a nice car. Not perfect, but way above average for a 29 year old car. Make me a serious offer and I'll present it to the lady. She's lowered the price to $6,500, but is willing to entertain a decent serious offer. Please feel free to call me at (901) 857-2338 if you are seriously interested. Thanks! Tom

One last bump before I send it to the lady's niece in Dallas.
Again, make a serious offer and I'll present it to her. It is a nice car and I have no reason to believe it wouldn't make someone a dependable ride. I've been driving it the past week and it has been amazing compared to my w123 as far as comfort. Not a perfect car, but in very good shape for a 29 year all original car and in far better shape that most $6,000 disposable eco-boxes I see for sale these days. Tom - 901-857-2338

One last bump.

I spoke with the lady's son. He states that he wants to get the car gone or send it to his daughter who lives in Dallas. He is giving it two weeks as I want it out of my driveway. He is willing to take $5200. Let me know if your interested. Thanks! Tom (901) 857-2338.

On a good day even considering the condition it's a $3500 car. He should send it to the daughter, however, if she's never driven one of these she's going to be disappointed...

X2... Had the same year/model as a daily driver for 4 years and over 100K miles. Very nice car in 1999-2003 time frame but its been far, far eclipsed by later models.

Anybody in the market for an older Mercedes diesel sedan is going to find better value in the W210 or even a higher mileage W211 CDI at the discounted 5K price point.

If I had the car for sale I'd take $2,500.

I definitely prefer the w124.128 over my 2007 w211.022 and the various w210s I have tried out. That said, with the sagging headliner, badly worn side bolster, rear bumper damage, crackled and bubbling center console wood paneling, the only real positives for this one are rust-free and low-ish miles, unfortunately.

Exactly. Sorry to thread crap, but the seller has unrealistic expectations of value or simply hasn't done their due diligence in establishing a price.

I suspect, like many cars in this situation, is that someone told Granny what they think it's worth and she believed them. No different than when a family member shows up here to peddle their deceased dad/grandpa/husband's "classic Mercedes". They've been pumped up over the years with talk of what it's worth (not tied to anything factual, of course) and get a shock when they discover in reality, it's far less than they had been told.

Surprise!

My w124 with bad paint on hood, roof and trunk, and a bad turbo, cost me a 2003 VW Golf TDI with a bad engine. I did have a spare engine that went with the TDI.

That said it was and even swap for me. Found a used turbo for $500. Car is up and running again.

$5200, too much. Book value was $4500.

Car is sold.

I haven't been on here over the past couple of days. You guys can stop worrying. It's a mute point. Sold the car to a gentleman in Jackson, Tennessee for $5500 late yesterday afternoon through Facebook Marketplace. There really is only one answer I can give you, if you don't like the price, don't buy it. Terry saw the value, had been looking for one, and was tickled pink with it. Thanks to all of you that expressed interest and I wish you all a Happy St. Patty's Day!- Tom
