EXPERIENCE REPLY
I AM THE THIRD OWNER AND HAVE OWNED IT SINCE 6/98. I HAD RUN IN THE ONE LAP OF AMERICA WITH MY 300ZX TWIN TURBO AND HAD SEEN FIRST HAND THE RESULTS OF THE RENNTECH CAR THAT HARTMUT RAN THAT YEAR. LATER ON I HAD PURCHASED A STARMARKED 94 E-500 AND VERY SHORTLY THEREAFTER THE OPPORTUNITY CAME UP TO BUY THIS CAR, SO I COULDNT RESIST. AT THE TIME OF MY PURCHASE THE CAR HAD 32,000 MILES ON IT. I PICKED IT UP AT ISRINGHAUSEN IN INDIANAPOLIS AND DROVE IT HOME. (SOMEHOW WITH NO TICKETS) THE FIRST OWNER HAD THE CONVERSION DONE IN MAY 1994, THEN SOLD IT. THE 2ND OWNER LIVED IN NEW YORK CITY, AND DID NOT DRIVE IT MUCH.(HE TRADED TO ISRINGHAUSEN FOR A NEWER RENNTECH CAR) IT WAS A SECOND CAR FOR ME AND STORED FOR THE WINTERS UP UNTIL THIS YEAR- WHEN I STARTED USING IT MORE OFTEN. (I SORT OF HATED WASTING IT AS A GARAGE QUEEN) I WORK FROM HOME, SO EVEN NOW IT DOESNT GET DAILY USE, ALTHOUGH I DID JUST GO TO DAYTONA FLA AND BACK OVER JULY 4TH (FROM CONN) THAT TRIP ALONE IS ABOUT 10% OF THE TOTAL MILES I HAVE DRIVEN IT. THE CAR HAS BEEN MAINTAINED BY A SMALL PRIVATE SHOP NEARBY- WHICH IS THE SAME TECH THAT THE 2ND OWNER USED. THE TECH IS VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE RENNTECH CONVERSION, AS HE ALSO OWNED AN IDENTICAL CAR, UNTILL HE SOLD IT LAST YEAR - WITH 15,000 MILES FOR $80,000.
IN SEPT 01 IT NEEDED NEW FRONT BRAKES, SO I CONVERTED TO THE BREMBOS FROM THE 13' ALCONS (WHICH HENDY NOW HAS) AND ALSO REPLACED THE FRONT SHOCKS WITH THE KONIS. I THEN TRACKED THE CAR TWICE - POCONO (IN THE RAIN) AND LIMEROCK LAST FALL. ALTHOUGH THE CAR WAS FAST, ITS OBVIOULSY NOT A RACE CAR AND I FIGURED THAT IF I WANT TO CONTINUE TO TAKE IT TO THE TRACK A FEW TIMES EACH SUMMER, THAT I WOULD MAKE THE REST OF THE NECESSARY (?) IMPROVEMENTS- KEEPING IN MIND THAT IT IS ALSO MY STREET CAR. THEREFORE, SINCE I NEEDED TIRES, I GOT THE NEW BBS WHEELS AS WELL, SO THAT I COULD USE THE OLD WHEELS FOR THE TRACK TIRES. I HAVE NEW HOOSIERS ON THEM AND AM LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING THEM OUT ! I ADDED THE REAR BREMBOS THIS MONTH WHEN IN FLORIDA. (TOOK A RAINY DAY TRIP FROM DAYTONA TO RENNTECH AND HAD THEM INSTALLED) I ALSO PURCHASED A SECOND SET OF FRONT BREMBRO ROTORS FOR TRACK USE ONLY- WHICH HAVE NOT YET BEEN ON THE CAR. IN JUNE I HAD THE REAR CAMBER LINKS AND BUSHINGS INSTALLED (I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THEY WERENT DONE WHEN THE REST OF THE LINKS WERE ORIGINALLY CHANGED!) I HAVE PURCHASED THE SPRINGS, SHOCKS AND POWER STEERING PUMP TO CONVERT THE REAR FROM SELF LEVELING TO A CONVENTIAL SYSTEM- AND ANTICIPATE HAVING IT INSTALLED BEFORE STARFEST. THIS HAS BEEN AN EXPENSIVE SUMMER! MAINTEANCE HAS BEEN ROUTINE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF TWO THINGS- NOT LONG (NOV 98) AFTER I GOT THE CAR, IT STARTED SOUNDING LIKE A DIESEL WHEN STARTED- SO I HAD ALL THE HYDRAULIC LIFTERS, CHAIN TENSIONER ETC REPLACED. I ALSO HAD THE CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM SERVICED, SO THAT IT WORKED PROPERLY. IN NOV 2000 (AT APPROX 50,000 MILES) THE TRANS STARTED SLIPPING, SO IT WAS COMPLETELY REPLACED WITH NEW MB UNIT, COMPLETE WITH THE RENNTECH MODS (FIRST GEAR START, ASR DEFEAT ) IN DEC 00 I HAD A MINOR FENDER BENDER (RAN INTO THE BACK OF JEEP IN THE RAIN- NO DAMAGE TO THE JEEP) THIS COST ME THE BIG ALUMINUM RADIATOR, HOOD, GRILL, AND ONE HEADLIGHT. I REPLACED THE RADIATOR WITH A STOCK UNIT. SO THERE YOU HAVE IT- FOR THE FIRST FEW YEARS IT WAS MY "BABY" AND WAS KIND OF A GARAGE QUEEN. SINCE LAST FALL ITS MORE OF MY "TOY" AND I DECIDED TO IMPROVE IT SO THAT THE REST OF THE CAR HAS THE SAME CAPABILITY AS THE MOTOR! ITS JUST ABOUT DONE. I HAVE MY EYES ON A NEWER RENNTECH CLK- SO THATS WHY ITS POSTED ON THE BOARD AT THIS PRICE. IF THE CLK GETS SOLD BEFORE MINE, I WILL KEEP IT. I WILL TAKE SOME DIGITAL PHOTOS IN THE NEXT DAY OR SO AND POST THEM. ALAN |
