'92 300D in Dallas

Mark,
Do a search on Cars.com. I saw a '92 300D with 87K on it listed last week. I think it was in Richardson or Plano. I think the asking price was about $9K, which seems like a good price.

Good luck

hey thanks... that was was through a wholeseller. I'm weary of buying through that particular channel. The other one for sale in this area has a 190d 2.5 engine transplanted in it.

I drove the 87K '92 300D a few weeks ago. Here's my thread on the subject: '92 300D - What's it worth I decided to pass on it because the price is too high (they won't negotiate) and the problem count is too high. None of the problems have been fixed - I talked to the owner earlier this week. This car needs two grand pumped into it right away to correct basic problems. That would make it a $12K car with no records. I'm not intererested at that price, and I would recommend you avoid it as well.

How's that - find a car in the ads, and get a review of it online? Gotta love the internet.

very cool, Jim! I think this lot is in Carrolton. Something like International Motors or European Imports...

Thanks again and I enjoyed your review!

Yup, that's the one - Midway and Trinity Mills are the cross streets, roughly. I forget the name of the lot, but it's International or European Motors, or something like that. Good luck with your search.

I went and looked again at the 87K car. I called to PO last night and found out it had been hit on the drivers door. That whole side had been painted. Also, the oil was like sludge... Can't figure it out!

Really - that's a surprise. I went over it carefully and couldn't detect any sign of bodywork. Must have done an OK job of fixing it. Just out of curiosity, how did you locate the previous owner?

Does it still have the shimmy problem, or did they fix that?

From the title. I was told she was from Houston and fortunately, she was the only one in the book. I did not test drive it. The sun roof would not close and was in need of greasing if not a new motor. Generally, I felt the chassis was neglected. The sludge in the oil really concerned me also. I agree with your assessment that it would take 2+K to get 'right'...

Have you located a 300D for yourself? Did you look at the one in FWorth?

No, I've been too busy to make it over to Ft. Worth to look at that one. Did talk to them on the phone, it sounds as if they run a nice lot full of used MBs. I finally got my car out of the shop, so I've been slumming, driving my 1998 E300 turbodiesel. Lately I've been thinking I better sell it before purchasing a new old car. Given the glut of used cars out there, it could take some time to sell and/or not fetch what I would like to get.

I've been watching both the 300Ds in Carrollton and Ft. Worth - both have been advertised for the last six weeks or more, and neither have sold. Maybe that should tell us something...

well, if you're slummin', then I have NO idea what I'm doing ! My cousin had a '98 TD and loves it. I'm looking at a 95 E300D... not too concerned with the lack of turbo... any experience with these?

My '98 has been in the shop quite a few times in the five years I've had it. I figure I may as well drive an old car at half the cost if it's going to be broken two weeks a year.

I'm not a big fan of the om606 engine in the '95 and later cars. I know of three cases in which the glow plugs broke in the head while being changed. In two cases the head had to be pulled to remove the glow plug remains. In the third case, the mechanic ruined the head ($2300 bare casting) while attempting to drill out the glow plug. I'm one of the three who went through this, and I just paid my mechanic $2600 to perform this work. So I'm not much of a fan of this engine. BTW, the turbodiesels require new glow plugs about every three years. Don't know about the earlier non-turbo om606 engines - they seem to have better GP life.
