DC area 1984 300D

Well, its time for home buying, and I need a roof over my head more than I need two Mercedes Benz automobiles! Consequently, the 300D is on the auction block. Check it out at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2423564959

Honestly, this car is mechanically in great condition. It does have some rust, which I tried to describe in the ebay description, but the car is worth putting the money into it and have the rust fixed. Then it would be both asthetically and mechanically very, very nice. Or don't fix the rust and just enjoy all the work I have done!!!! If anyone lives in the DC area and wants to take a look, just let me know.

Not only did I pump mucho dinero into the car for all those parts mentioned on ebay, but I also kept a detailed log of everything I did. I can email this to anyone that is interested.

Thanks,

GregS

The 300D didn't reach its reserve on ebay, so if anyone here is interestred, let me know. Interior is in excellent condition, exterior looks nice, although there is some surface rust around the rear wheel wells, and mechanically the car is in excellent condition. It runs and drives beautifully and is perfectly reliable. I'm asking $3,200, but open to offers.

O.K., any takers for $2,700? Another potential buyer had it looked at by R.C. Imports in Rockville, MD, and the following things were mentioned:

-rusty center exhaust (resontator/muffler section)
-rusty hood hinges (Which I already divulged in my ebay profile)
-radiator to overflow reservoir upper hose (the 1/4" diameter one) should be replaced
-a couple tierod joints have play in them (I don't know which ones, but I know that the left tierod assembly was replaced about 1.5 years ago, so at most it needs the center link and right side tierod assembly)
-upper left control arm bushings are bad
-oil seperator drain line should be replaced (I personally disagree with this. I intentionally replaced the MB pipe that leaks all over the place with rubber hose, hose clamps and sealant. It certanly wasn't designed by Mercedes that way, and it may not look pretty, but guess what? It doesn't leak - which would you rather have?)
-wheel well rust (which I already divulged)

Personally, I was pretty proud to have R.C. Imports look at my 20 year old daily driver and not find anything major. I didn't think they would, but its nice to know another mechanic (besides myself) would look at it and give it a decent bill of health. Nonetheless, I haven't had any serious offers, so I will lower the price once again. Does $2,700 sound attractive to anyone out there?

Thanks,

GregS

Could be. Its got to be something though, because I drive it every freakin' day and its as dependable as a Toyota Camry; and still no one wants it! I guess people are concerned about the rust too, especially now that I live down south (formerly from NY), and people are used to seeing completely rust free cars all the time. In Upstate NY you would never see a car this old on the road because it would have rusted away long ago.

They sell stuff called "paint" in stores..;

and the cosmetic rust these models accumulate has not seemed that difficult to deal with. These models are sooooo mechanically bulletproof I'd love to find a shop that could "freshen up" solid examples for use as daily drivers. A couple of small firms did this with "real" VW beetles.

A lot of the colors Mercedes came in have gone in and out of style...many still look just fine. Saw a really bright red one not that long ago which was really striking.

Being the new kid on the block, I'd guess the issue with the VIN is what is keeping people away. Also, you may want to get more pictures -- closeups are important!

In case anyone is interested, she's going back on the auction block tonight. I got better pictures this time too. As for the color, there isn't anything I can do, and as for the VIN, well, how really does that affect the car (assuming it has a valid title, which it does). I suppose it somehow taints the Mercedes pedigree, but the car is 20 years old and has some history. I can't do anything about that. For a used car buyer the important things SHOULD be whether its mechanically sound and how it has been cared for, and this car has those bases covered.

I'll post the link when I get it on ebay.
