Need an EZL for a 1994 E500

I need an EZL, also known as an ignition control module for an m119 motor -- 1993 or later. Can anyone help me? Please email khari@kmc-law.com Thanks.

You want new or used ?

I can get you a deal on a new one or Beckman Technologies in NC will probably have used ones for cheap. They re-build them and are very good and reputable.

Ezl

I was looking for used, but my understanding is that there is no way to rebuild these. By the time you open it up, you've completely destroyed it. What the best price?

I'll need your VIN number for the correct part number to get you a price.

Call Robert at Beckmann Technologies on the used one(s) ....(919) 381-2700 ... he'd be better able to tell you about them and if they were/are re-buildable. I was going to get a rebult EFP module from him but got a new one for free !! Thanx Carriage House Mercedes !!

New the EZL is something like $1500 wholesale, IIRC - ouch. For used, try Potomac German on the east coast, and Silver Star on the west coast. Those are the two larger (largest?) MB recyclers. No idea on cost, but I wouldn't pay over $200-$400 for a used one... if you hunt around long enough, you can probably get one for less from a yard that doesn't know what they're worth...

I had to replace my EZL too and when I called around enquiring about EZLs I found out that rebuilt EZLs for our 500E500s are not available. I ended up buying a used one from a recycler......

BTW, what's the failure mode for the EZL? Does the car not run at all, or just poorly? If poorly, what does it do...?

Thanks!

Of course, you should also try Phil here at FASTLANE for a price on a new one.

More info

The car won't start. It cranks over and over, sounds like a car that has no fuel, but there's no spark. EZL prices have gone up considerably. Retail is well North of $2K, as dealer pays (i.e., their cost) is approx $1700. Salvage yards like Potomac German want $1200 for one with a 60 day warranty. That's nuts in my book. Still haven't found one. And no, they are not rebuildable unfortunately. Just the existence of a part this expensive, this prone to failure, and wholly unserviceable really makes me sick.

D'oh - so it's a binary failure, it either works, or it doesn't. Guess mine is ok then.

Pricing - have you tried Silver Star yet? There are two equivalent part numbers, one is MUCH cheaper than the other. I hope the second one is still available. Dealer pricing as of two months ago was:
  • Part number --------- Desc. -------- Retail ---- Whlsle --- Dealer Cost
    ====================================================
    015-545-61-32 ---- IGNITION CON -- 2970.00 -- 2380.00 -- 1780.00
    015-545-62-32 ---- IGNITION CON -- 1650.00 -- 1320.00 -- 990.00

I almost guarantee you can get one for $200-$400 if you try hard enough. The same part is also used on the SL500 (129.067) and the S500 (140.051 and 140.070). There are a TON of 140's in salvage yards and some of these yards don't always know (or care) what the EZL costs new. It can take a lot of phone calls but it's worth it. I picked up an LH module for under $200 shipped, when most yards want $300-$400, and some want $600-$900 - cost new is ~$2000. For that kind of savings, I can make some calls! Use www.car-part.com, search for various generic parts on a 500SEC or SEL, see which yards seem to have a lot of W140's, and call them up. There's a yard in Stockton, CA that has a bunch of them but I don't know what their pricing is...

Good luck!

When my DI module quit a . . .

few years ago, I found a used on the PartTrackers network for $250. Came from a junk yard in NYC. At that time, a new one from MB was $1100.

Check the LINKS section on my page (at the bottom) and give it a try. What you do have to loose??

Thanks for the tips

I've been burning up the phone lines trying to find one. Silver Star had one a week ago but wanted $1200 and was offering a 60 day warranty. I passed on that deal. The cheapest price I'm getting quoted is $800 and that still feels too high. $250 seems like a steal, but $500 seems fair. I know you can use the EZL from any 93-95 500, but not the the 92 because that had the CIS-E fuel injection. Just my luck, I keep finding EZLs from the 92. I'm going to follow up on the suggestions you all have made and report back. Thanks again.

Question for JimF

Hi, I stumbled on your page doing a google search for ezl, but it was an older non-updated version. It only discussed the ezl. On the new page you mention a performance chip for the V8. Have you installed it? Does it work as advertised? My understanding was that no chip existed for the 32 valve V8s. Your car is attractive. Here's a picture of mine, except I've had the lower cladding painted brilliant silver to match.

Fwiw, all 500E M119 engines use LH injection and NOT CIS-E. There still may be a difference between early and late EZL units but the injection is the same with the exception WOT fuel enrichment on the early cars.

I am 99% positive you can use an EZL from a 1992-95 W140, and a 1993-95 R129. The 1992 R129 was not an LH system and may have a different ignition setup. But AFAIK, you should be OK with 92-95 on the S-class...! And I agree, $800 sounds high (ouch). Have you tried Stockton Auto in CA? They have a bunch of 92-95 W140's. Also try Greenleaf (they're a chain with a number of locations, including Texas and MA). There are a few others I'll try to think of the names...
