86 300e/AMG Hammer project for sale Well my red hammer is (and has been) available for $8500 for quite a while now with no takers.
It is a project with the engine currently out of the car.
86 300e/AMG Hammer project for sale

I started a new biz venture and have absolutely no time at all to work on it.
Heck, I hardly have time to check out what's new here anymore.

I have had alot of inquiries but everyone wants me to send more pics, etc, and I just don't have time to spare right now.
(I'm still working at my "day job",,,,,yet am also building 6 cobra replicas and 3 GT40s at the moment ,,,,,,,,,I'm not getting much sleep, but hopefully will be hiring some help soon!)

I really need the workspace, and hate to think of storing this car outside.

If I don't sell it pretty soon to a true MBZ enthusiast, I'm considering ebay,,,,,,,or just hanging on to it until I get the chance to get it going again.

......oh, and as far as powerplants go,,,,,,,,, scream at me if you must,,,,,,,

but I will probably end up putting an alum ford 4.6 32 valve in it with a supercharger and a 6speed manual box. The ford stuff makes soooo much power sooo easily,(and sooo cheap compared to ridiculously priced MB perf parts) that the MBZ stuff is not even an option to me anymore.

One of the cobras I built is running sub 10 second 1/4 mile times with this engine and is making over 600hp! This is on a stock 4.6 32v with good rods/pistons, and an ATI supercharger & intercooler, cheap to build, and goes like stink!

Alain,

I take yours was originally fitted with a 6.0 engine?

Do you know the history to your car and is that the original interior?...the only reason I ask is that I have an August 1987 copy of Road and Track open in front of me and they are testing a car identical to yours....makes impressive reading!!!!

So to you guys out there wanting a genuine Hammer, albeit without the original engine, its got to be worth more than $8500......surely!

I am one of the guys that neeeeds pics! I have been interested in the car for quite some time but can't justify buying it with only the blurry pics on the website. I have the engine for the car in my car right now, eagerly waiting to swap into into Alain's car and make it right again! How many true enthusiasts are going to do that Alain??

Mine was a swap for a regular 560 motor. I bought a 6.0 DOHC SEC with a side impact and swapped it and everything else into my SEC. I think a blacked out SEC with AMG setup looks a lot better than a red 300E with AMG setup, but the Hammers are little rarer and I'd like to restore it back to its glory. I'd possibly put the 500SL motor that comes with Alain's car into my coupe like Satish on mbcoupes.com.

Maybe/maybe not.........trying to find a quad cam AMG 5.6 or 6.0 will be very difficult though.....they only made 185 or is it 195 engines in total in 5.0, 5.6 and 6.0 guises and most of these went into SEL's/SEC's and some were kept as spares and some went into Le Mans racers of the time (Sauber I think used a race tuned version of the quad cam engine.......I just can't imagine that there are many good second hand engines around that are not fitted to other cars, so maybe fitting a Ford V8 is not as bad as all that......at least it still keeps the car on the road and other road users will still think they've been whipped by a Benz

Is there much metalwork needed to fit the M119 engine?........I read somewhere that when they fitted the M119 engine to make the E500 that they needed to reduce the height of the engine for it to fit under the hood of the W124......do the cars need different chassis cross members etc?

The 500's frame was widened by Porsche to handle the larger engine and transmission. Additional bracing was also added to increase the strength of the chassis. The widening may also have something to do with the increased stability when cornering and at high speed. The deck height of the engine was also shortened but I'm not sure how extensively and if it's something simpe or not.

I have to assume that AMG did something similar to fit the larger engine under the hood of their cars. Anyone with a Hammer know what was done on the 5.0, 5.6 and 6.0 conversions?

reshaped firewall

to fit the DOHC M117 AMG had to move the battery to the trunk and reshape the firewall to accomodate the wider heads. Search this site for posted underhood photos of a red Hammer coupe and you can see the firewall mods and the piping snaking through the firewall.

The SOHC M117 6.0 fit without this modification and the battery in my wagon is underhood. Not much space left though..

Vladamir, is yours the Hammer car reviewed by LJK Setright in Car Magazine, December 1986? If not, there may be another UK Hammer...

Well well well, I have been trying for months to find out which UK car mags tested the Hammer and despite e-mailing them all, none of them have responded.

I am therefore very interested to hear that CAR tested one in 1986.

Do you have a copy of the mag?

I would love to see if its my car in the article.

Many thanks

See my post in this thread: 1987 Amg Hammer.....

I have the magazine in my collection; however I am moving house at the moment and it is not to hand. It is a long article by Setright with some very impressive photography. I cannot recall whether the car was white or black...

AMG cars cropped up with surprising regularity in Car of this period. I suspect this was because Stratstone of Wilmslow, the official AMG importer, was a heavy advertiser in the magazine. The editorial staff at Car at that time also favoured Q-cars and Mercs generally. Stratstone might be able to help you in your quest for information. I had some dealings with them a few years ago over a Porsche 996 and they were enthusiastic, although like all the big car retailers these days there was a lot more style than substance.

JJRoger,

Yeah, it sounds if Setright was testing one of the later models...my guess it was probably a silver left hand drive one that all of the mags seemed to be testing at the time, along with a black LHD Coupe that was doing the rounds..these two cars seem to crop up everywhere.

By the way, easy confusion, the AMG agent at the time was Strattons not Stratstone's who were a Ferrari dealer...it appears that Strattons were taken over by one of the big dealer chains and now appear to have disappeared into the ether, which is a shame as it would have been good to have been able to pick their brains.

Thanks for the input.....much appreciated!
