I installed a pre-made wire harness when I installed euro lights on my Audi Quattro. Boy, what a difference that made!
I bought the wiring harness because I also installed 80-100W H-4 bulbs for the outside and 100W H-3 bulbs for the inside, high beams and didn't want to fry anything (400 watts altogether on high beams). There were only two problems with the installation. 1. Trying to figure out were the power, neutral and ground wires hooked up to the new lights, and 2. Finding a good ground. The later is very important. Also, don't forget to use good connectors (better yet, solder them). Was it worth it? Absolutely! |

re: premade harness
Remember that the H4 bulb on most Mercedes Euro units (W124 for sure) is way inside the unit. The factory harness connects to a connector on the outside of the unit and then there is wire inside the unit from the connector to the H4 bulb. "Premade" is a bit of an oxymoron here because you'll have to modify it anyway. ------------------ Kent Christensen '88 300E (wife's) |

I would like to put the 100 watt bulbs in my C43 (for high beam only). I have the H7 type bulbs for high beam. I have the HID for low beam, so obviously they are fine! Would any of you recommend going to 100w? 130w? Also, I have found a few suppliers for the 100w, but I cannot verify the manufacturer...so I am thinking they are no-name junk bulbs. I have found 70w name brand h7's, but I really wanted to go to 100w!
All advice appreciated! |

AutoExpress has new test results up for 2003. Same deal, PIAA is horrendously overpriced & has only mediocre performance, and the Philips & Osram "premium" stuff is top notch. Read for yourself:
Standard bulbs: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/product_test/product_test_story.php?id=39920 Plus 30 bulbs: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/product_test/product_test_story.php?id=39919 Plus 50 bulbs: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/product_test/product_test_story.php?id=39917 Enjoy... |

why not settle for the real thing.
why not settle for the real thing. i bought my HID from a wrecking company and paid $200 for it. and ill tell you its well worth it.
a lot of companies now offer HID replacements for stock cars i would recommend the CATZ HID. they even have the H4 replacement with hi/lo beam. try it out it turns night into day. |

There was another thread or two on this forum detailing why not to use HID burners in a lamp housing designed for halogens. It can be done but requires adding custom shielding around the burner. Dropping in an HID burner into an Hx housing may look impressively bright, but the light pattern is actually lousy, and glares into oncoming traffic. Much better to use megawatt halogen "Rallye" bulbs with relays from a light output perspective. The lumens are equal to or higher than HID with a 4-bulb halogen setup like the 500E Euros. But don't take my word for it, read what the lighting expert (Dan Stern) says:
Can I convert my halogen headlamps to HID? So you've read about HID headlamps and have it in mind to convert your car. A few mouse clicks on the web, and you've found a couple of outfits offering to sell you a "conversion" that will fit any car with a given type of halogen bulb, for between $900 and $1300. STOP! Put away that credit card. Trying to "convert" halogen headlamps to HID is an unsafe thing to do. There are *NO* legitimate or safe HID retrofits for the headlamps of any car which didn't have HID lamps as a factory option. Here's why: http://lighting.mbz.org/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html |

Well I had a really bad experience with those "Blue Bulbs". I had recently bought a set of Euros for my 300E, and I wanted brighter lights. Well I did not have the $$$ for an hid set up, so I bought the $20 bulbs. Well one day I saw my coolant light come on, I opened the hood, and smelled a faint odor of burning plastic. Well, I traced the odor to my brand new Euro headlights. The "blue bulbs" were melting my housing. I dumped the blue bulbs and went with the stock H4 bulbs. As soon as I rounded up some money, I bought a set of HID's from a buddy of mine. They came out of a wrecked 2002 Porsche. The light quality is superb! I fabricated my own "glare shields" so the light is projected correctly. I no longer have the "HID look" bulbs or those crappy kits that are sold on ebay, I have OEM D2S HID's in my 300E. The HID's also use LESS wattage than the HID look bulbs
HID 35w(no need to upgrade any wiring) Blue bulbs-55w-100w(too much current draw) If you can't afford it now, save up for later.
