Horsepower isn't easy to find on this engine. The engine needs more compression to make enough horsepower to make a difference. My new engine is .040" overbore & 9.5/1 compression. Also open headers make a few hp's. DON'T use platinum plugs in this engine. I use Beru (4 electrode) ultra X copper plugs.
Running the fuel mixture on race car is different than a street car.

The only thing you can do for the street and still get the car through emissions each year and still be able to run on pump gas is to stroke the motor and use low compression. I have done several low compression stroker motors and they hold up well. Its the same thing Mercedes did with the 2.3-16v and the evoultion 1 they through a big crank in it and punch the holes and you have low compression motor thats reliable and is worth about 20-25% more power.
Good luck
Rick

Well thanks you for the info, but how do u stoke an engine and where can u get that done is it like getting cam work done.Cause my car is an eight valve 2.3 1987, it seem like the cams they make are for the 16v. So how easy is it to get the cam job done on A 8v., or do it need to invest in a 16v. What are my options?

You can stroke either motor. You should only do a stock valve job and camshaft if you are going to drive on the street. This way it will idle and you can run pump gas.

Most drag racers always want a bigger cam shaft, but rarely do they do much to help a stock engine. If the exhaust system has been changed to allow more flow & fuel system improved, then a cam might help. On most engines w/CIS-E cams can hurt performance unless the compression has been raised. I use a stock cam & pull 154 HP at 6200, & many times see 7200 on the tach.

mr benz 01-30-2000 09:30 AM

M.B doc, How do u aquire 154 hp. on a stock cam. You gotta explain that one to me. I've been hearing so much different sugestions. Since youre a racer , id like to get your feed back on how u get more out of a 190 e 8v 2.3

C&B Racing 01-30-2000 12:24 PM

MB Doc I also want to know how you get 154hp out of a "stock" cam ?

surfnvet 01-31-2000 02:13 AM

yes I agree 154 out of a stock cam hmmm... this one I need to hear since I am on my tenth motor

mbdoc 01-31-2000 08:11 PM

With open headers & blue-printed engine, 20 more HP isn't that hard to come up with. An increase in compression to 9.6/1 really helps.

mr benz 02-01-2000 08:29 PM

mb doc ,do u mean it will help if i maybe added a supersprint exhaust kit to my car, headers included. Explain? And what a blue-prined engine?

mbdoc 02-01-2000 08:40 PM

As my 190E is a race only car I don't have to worry about noise! Yes the exhaust system good way to increase horsepower.
Blue printed means fit every part in the engine precisely. Not + - specs as the factory does. All parts balanced to exactly the same weight. Complete engine tear-down & rebuild.

mr benz 02-01-2000 08:51 PM

Thank you, and you said springs too, which do u recomend?

C&B Racing 02-02-2000 08:06 PM

Surfnvet, I,m curious, what do you mean tenth motor,do you race?

My disasters are numerous... perhaps it needs a page by itself. I am in the school of break it to figure it out. I don't know if I should embarrass myself. The last fiasco was the chain tensioner fiasco...did you know that you can actually break the camshaft off? Yep right infront of the front 1/2 cam saddle. That led to the metal in the timing chain fiasco should I go further? I will say that I can probably rebuild the 2.3 enigine without taking it out of the car...LOL :)
