cold air intake

if i have a supercharger with an intercooler, would i also be able to put a cold air filter such as a "cone" filter from K&N

thanx all

Where is your "supercharger with an intercooler" going to be getting air from?

Benz42 09-29-2004 05:44 PM

i should have been more clear.......i have a c43(w202) with an eaton supercharger and an intercooler, i currently have the normal "box" air filter i was wondering if i could take that out and put in a cold air intake?

I had CAI in my Acura CLs previously. However, since you already have the supercharger and intercooler, adding CAI will not improve your current performance. ;)

The problem with putting a cone type filter on a benz is that they already draw in cold air from the outside. Unless you design some type of system to shield the cone from the heat of the engine compartment, you will actually notice a drop in performance.

Am I wrong in thinking that superchargers don't have intercoolers, but turbochargers do ?

Badinfo 10-18-2004 06:57 PM

Yup :) Intercoolers just cool the air coming from the charging device. Not many supercharger applications require one since the charged air from a supercharger is significantly colder than from a turbo, but if you are running high boost, or just want to be awesome, you can always throw an intercooler into the mix.

You need an intercooler on a street driven supercharged motor after around 5- 7psi. I have an air to ait intercooler and meth/water injection on my SEC, but then again, I'm running over 10 psi of boost.

cold air intake

Super sec, I am interested in going the intercooled supercharger route for my euro 560, I was wondering if you had any images of the pro-charger fitted, did it involve a lot of custom work? Also I seem to remember seeing some images of your custom headers, any chance of a new link?

you have a supercharged C43. isn't it enough power?

anyways, the power gains might be 5%? install the filter, don't install those fake ebay intakes. they suck

thought I would chime in..I'm new but I do know a thing or two about superchargers since I daily drive a 98' GTP with a modified M90 supercharger with a 3.4 pulley diameter pulley...roughly 8-10psi of boost I believe....I ditched the stock air filter setup because a box filter on any engine for performance is going to be a bottleneck. Sure benz might of done there homework and created a super efficent intake, but its still not going to flow like an open element style. For my GTP I opted for a Thrasher CAI and it works great. On the GTPs you have to worry about KR (knock retard) because the engine senses knock (detonation) and pulls timing away from the engine as to not damage it...with a scan tool hooked up to view the KR, I was getting around 2-3 degrees @ the top of 2nd gear...after installing the CAI I had 0 all the way across the board....maybe on my application it was different but I think you cant go wrong with an open element air filter. Supercharged and turboed engines love as much air as you can give to them...on my 300D I noticed that the stock airbox makes a 90 degree bend...and I was on a forum and heard someone say its not restrictive...lmao the thing is practically kinked in half! Sometimes stock isnt the best. Plus when you put an open element style in you can hear your supercharger or turbo a lot more.....on my 300D it screams...I love the sound! Superchargers make a "wrr" sound but its still intimdating!
