Question 88 300CE Exhaust Mods

Eva is in need of a center muffler and I would like to eventually add an aftermarket rear performance muffler , has anyone eliminated their center muffler and gone to a single muffler setup? I don't want the car to sound like a ricer , but a quiet 6 cylinder growl would be nice . Any advice or ideas?

I just did my exhaust...

...on the 500E. I worked with someone in Burnaby. I know they could rig up a good system for the 300CE. PM me and I can give you more details if needed.

Shaun

No problem..

Talk to Richard at Allen Auto Tech in Burnaby. He did my whole exhaust from the cat back. He used 3" mandrel bends and two Dynomax mufflers. Take a look on my gallery and see what you think...

Their number is (604) 451-1760
Remember to ask for Richard and tell him Shaun sent you.

P.S. I would personally recommend just doing a "Y" pipe where the resonator is for performance. If you want a better sound, put on a free flow muffler. A Mercedes exhaust is quite tuned as it is...

Thumbs up Out in Agassiz!

I didn't know you were that far out. Nice area. The long stretch by Seabird Island on a quiet day is where I got my 500E up to 240kph on a business trip.
Yeah I guess Burnaby is a way to go. I do not know of a reputable exhaust shop in the Hope/Agassiz area but there must be some in Mission. Just get them to take off the old system and make a new bolt on so you can always go back to stock or sell your stock system to recover some costs like I did. My exhaust is on a 400E in Texas right now. Thanks Albert Good luck and keep me posted.

P.S. On a side note, a buddy in my office is looking for a 300CE. Any advice or would you sell?

Shaun

Eva's not for sale ! :p But I've seen a few on the local buy and sell for less than $10K , be careful though because the cheapest benz is always the most expensive. They seem to have all the normal 300E issues as far as common repairs go.
Now back to the exhaust issue , Shaun did using the two mufflers make it not sound like a muscle car , did you end up with a quiet idle and big noise only when you wind it up. I don't want to end up with a droning exhaust note at cruising speed.

Good for you not selling Eva

My car is not loud at all. The pre muffler is a straight through dynomax and the muffler is a free-flow Chambered one. The car is actually quiet but does have a low base rumble (my wife can hear me pull into the driveway) that is nice. It is a Benz and I didn't want to sound like a Mustang with Flowmasters. It could be a bit louder but you want to keep the smooth flow of power rather than a "shake your fillings out" kind of noise.

I talked to the owner of the shop we service our company trucks at , showed him the pics from BauhnBuster's thread . He's ordering the mufflers (I'm going with 2 1/2" , close to stock size) and it should be done by the weekend . Thanks Shaun for the info and the photo gallery .

wait, so is the pre-muffler necessary? Would it be too obnoxious if it wasn’t there? I don’t want too much attention since I've only got an E420 with stock gears.

what about magnaflow mufflers?

Thumbs up You're welcome Kyle

Good luck with the install and keep us posted. The pre-muffler is usually replaced with a "Y" pipe. It is not obnoxious unless you go with a straight through muffler.......like a Magnaflow. I would just recomend doing the "Y" pipe and take advantage of the weight savings.

Shaun

the benz system goes from the 2 cats, into the resonator, then into the muffler right?

but in your picts I see a Y pipe from the cats into one muffler (non chambered), and then into another muffler (chambered).

is the non-chambered muffler important, or can I just run from the cats into a Y pipe, then into the final chambered muffler.

So I take it that magnaflows are a no-no

Update on the exhaust..

Hey AltBenz. On the stock Benz (500E), the two cats are joined together (side by side) with dual outlets. This goes into the resonator (dual in / single out) then into the muffler (single in / dual out). You are correct on how I did my exhaust but to answer your question I belive it is important. First, the exhaust from the factory is well tuned, just heavy. Try to keep it the same configuration. If the pre-muffler is out, you can get resonance in the cabin and that is the worst for a Benz! The resonator on the stock 500E is free flow but very heavy (30lbs ) so my main purpose was to lighten the load. You make the call. I prefer my 500 to not be too obnoxious and have a nice rumble.

hey Shaun thanks for the update. I suppose I should give some local muffler places a call and see what it'll run.
