Hey all,

Thanks for being patient with me and my slow way of doing things. After balancing time between school and work, I've finally been able to complete the installation of my Mosselman turbo system for my '86 190E 2.3-16V. Let me tell you this first. I'm going to have a complete write up on the 190 Revolution website for installation and things and I'm going to borrow my buddies Gtech pro meter to get some performance numbers out of the car. But don't worry, I'm going to fill you guys in on some early info. so you don't have to wait until the update of the site. The kit was a pain in the @$$ to install. I'm fairly good at mechanics and the like but this was one of the biggest jobs i've stepped up to. The reason was not b/c the kit was bad. It had all the parts necessary and most everything fit. The kit was very detailed and it is one of the most complete and best turbo kits I've seen. However, I had problems fitting the downpipe on the turbine housing and I had to re-weld the Intercooler tubing in order for it to fit to the throttle body housing. What a job. I had to re-route some vacuum lines that the turbo kit came with because of the motor mount being in the way. This re-routing utilized 90 degree tubes in order to bend around the motor mount. I wasn't expecting this job to be that easy, but to say the least, it was harder than it should've been. However, after all is said and done....the performance changes are a night and day difference. Folks, you won't believe how this 16V forces your ass in the seat. The exciting thing is, is i'm only running 5.5psi. The turbo is a T3 garret turbo so the boost starts around 3K RPM. After 3K, you better hold on. One example would be on the highway I was cruising about 60MPH and came up on this car going maybe 55MPH..so I decide to pass him. I just kept it in 5th and put the gas down about 3/4 of the way and a split second later I can hear the turbo singing making that supersonic high pitch (like the sound of a 747 jets kicking in) That thing was putting me in my seat going 60MPH. I hit 90 before I knew what happened. Wow.....I'm just very excited right now. I can't wait to get some real numbers down. But also note that I rode in a buddies 1995 M3 the other day and he gunned it.....that car is very fast. it put me in my seat and the engine sounds very nice. Of course it is what 3.6L??? and it has a 6 cyl. DOHC 24V engine with a 10.5:1 comp ratio...so it should be pretty fast. I gave him a little ride in my 16V turbo to return the favor and I saw him gripping the handles really good. He was very impressed and said that my 16V would definantly hang with his M3. Of course, the M3 gets the 16V early with the loads of torque it has, but after that turbo kicks in, I believe the 16V would hang w/ the M3. I still have my stock 2 1/4" exhaust too. I can't wait until I convert to a 3" exhaust to get that turbo to respond faster. I've got more upgrades coming and I'm very enthused about it. I'll keep everyone posted and get some pics soon. Let me know if you want a Mosselman turbo as well.

Hey Clinton,

How much did the kit cost? Have you looked into other brands before purchasing the Mosselman kit?

Chuck

Clinton, sounds like you are going to enjoy all that work!

I too, am curious about where to get a mossleman kit in the states and what the costs are? Remember the pics I sent you of my friend (Priest's) car? That is my old street car, (I sold it to him- to "help" pay for my cobra.)and he has been asking me about maybe doing some more engine mods.

I have seen a twin turbo manifold on E-bay I think its for a 300e but not sure.

Clinton your car sounds sweet. got some pics/ performance figures yet? I'd love to see it.

Too bad we have such strict emmisions here in california, otherwise I'm sure you'd see more tuning of cars out here.

Any tuning done needs to still pass smog laws here, so tuning extremes are very limited.

answers to questions....

Hey Alain,

Long time no....read. Yeah, I remember Priest's ride...it is nice. I got the kit from the United Kingdom. I paid $3,600 USD and $400 USD to have it shipped. They can only send it express so the shipping was more than expected, but on the flip side, I got the kit only 2 days after Mosselman built it. The distributor I ordered it from is called http://www.tdi-plc.com go to their website....they have some pics and stuff of the kit and a small description. I ordered it from them b/c I spoke to Jos Bekker at Bekkers and he said he can get me the same kit for $5,200 USD unshipped. I spoke to another guy in San Francisco who said he could get the same kit for $5,000 USD. So I did my homework. There was no way I was going to beat $3,600. So I went for it and now I'm happily boosting. hehe. To answer your Q's Chuck, I did research other turbo kits and even considered doing a custom job after finding out that the Mosselman kit was very hard to come by. But everyone was telling me that it would be about $4000 after all is said and done, and then after that, I'd have to do some fine tuning w/ the fuel and the work would be custom. I just didn't want to mess with the hassle. I wanted something that was already tried and true. Plus, Mosselman doesn't utilize the old adjustable Fuel pressure regulator set up to deliver the added fuel, they send you a "fuel Komputer" that by passes the stock delivery and connects to the Fuel distributor. And is run on a vacuum connected to the brake booster vacuum line. That would be very difficult to make. So, yes, I did consider other options and as far as I know, Mosselman is the only system that is made for the rare 16V. If not, I'd like to know others. Good luck.

Hey there,

Yeah, that twin turbo manifold is for the 300E. I remember seeing it for sale. Anyway, I do have pics of just my car, but no engine shots w/ the turbo installed yet. But I'm going to a Import gathering in my area today so, I'll make sure to get some pics and post em later. About emissions, yeah, that sucks. I live in Fayetteville, Arkansas and we have no emissions tests...yet. knock on wood. So I don't have to worry about that kind of thing. You can go to my website at http://mb190.tripod.com and there you will find pics of my 16V....it is under "readers Rides".....the name is Clinton. Later.

Clinton Davis

That manifold set is for the early 104 engine. This is the engine that was installed in the coupe and the SL in the 3.0 and the 3.2 in the S class in 1992...

G-Man 12-06-2000 12:49 PM

Wow, I wish I had know about that sooner. They offer a superchager kit for the 300GE. That would have been perfect. Since I am in the G320 now I may have to "settle" for the turbo. I emailed them since nothing is listed on the web page. Thanks for the link, if they have a reasonably priced kit for mine look out G500s.

Clinton 12-06-2000 03:32 PM

Yeah.....TDI has alot of other kits for Mercedes Benz that are fairly hard to find in the states. I'm glad I found that site too. Later.
