has any one installed a light weight fly-wheel in a 16v.I know of two sources of where to get one. I hear there is a power gain through the acceleration. The claim was about a 1/2 second in the 0-60mph range. Could installing cause any mechanical problems in the engine? or any other parts of the drive train?
Looking for advice Mauro 87 190e 16v |

Lighter flywheel usually allows engine to rev faster..I would seek out whoever lightens Porsche flywheels cause those guys do it alot when they race! Mechanically the flywheel is the same as long as it is balanced correctly. 4 cyl engines do great with a heavier flywheel unless you are revving in the stratosphere.

I made an aluminum flywheel for my MGA a while back. Stock was about 22lbs. and the aluminum one was only 8.5lbs. It made a noticible difference in performance. But the idle had to be a little higher, and higher rpms on take offs.
The most obvious difference was swapping a 9oz flywheel for the 6lbs. flywheel in my ducati motorcycle. The inertia/energy required to accelerate the flywheel goes up by the square of the RPM. For the MGA I think I calculated it took the equivalent of about 10 HP off the top end to accelerate the flywheel. Does not affect the top speed of the car, just acceleration. Eric |
