Geez...

I guess I never signed up on this thread. A friend called me today to say he was looking at a 500e and wanted my advice - I referred him to this forum and reread this thread and realized I never signed up my '92 500E (72K miles, renntech chip, air box and muffler, 3 piece amg's). I've had it for a couple years now and it's in winter hibernation now - I drive the 300te 4-matic in winter. I recently was fortunate enough to acquire a 92 Renntech 620 sl (500sl with full renntech mods on snazzy looking OZ wheels).

I really am not a "driver" of these cars - no track experience at all. The 500e is the most pure fun just because it does what it looks like it can't. The 620sl does more but then...

I recently had the 500e roof repainted due to some sun fading ( it was a Texas car) and had the front air dam and rocker panels repainted and stone guarded. I also had the front door seal replaced and the side door pockets stretched and re-glued (Mercedes dealer said they had to replace the leather for $$$, but Riggs Brothers fixed 'em like new - they also replaced the head liner that was staring to separate a bit. The black leather interior is otherwise remarkable for it's 12 year age.

I'm biased of course, but I prefer the lines of the '92 to the the 93 and 94. Since it's not a winter car, great head lamps are not a priority, but the 620sl lights turn night into day - might have to reconsider upgrading the 500e.

My 500e is the pedestrain pearl black on black - most common but still pretty IMHO. The black centers of the wheels that match the cladding is a nice touch. I need to send the wheels to have some minor rash treated and then the car will be quite presentable, but not concours. Both the 620sl and the 500e are '92 models. I wish Mercedes had used the "switch blade" key with remote for the 500e also - this is a nice feature. The wood steering wheel on the 620 has a nicer feel than the 500e wheel. Several little things on the 620sl reflect the fact that it was a bit more "up market" from the $80K 500e in 1992. The 620sl even has a power adjustable inside rear view mirror - technology in search of an application in this example. I like the drivers manual outside rear view in the 500e - make you feel like the driver actually has a role in aiming the machine down the road.

The idea is certainly not "silly"

Where to shoehorn them in without modifying the front end is the potentially "silly" part. My S6 can be upgraded to RS6 status by installing twin turbos increasing the horses from 350 to 450 and the torque from 315 to 420 at the wheels. The problem is that I will have to beef up the entire drive train to handle the increased horsepower and torque thereby surpasing the cost of just selling the S6 and buying an already properly engineered RS6.

These German "hot rods" were/are engineered across the entire drive spectrum. If you change one component, you must also "change" all components that may be affected by that changed component.

RECENT DAIMLER/CHRYSLER GOOF: In 1998, the Jeep division put a HEMI 5.9 Liter engine into a Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD Frame WITHOUT OTHER MODS to accomodate the increased horsepower. The result was a high center of gravity SUV that would accelerate you rapidly up the MPH spectrum with no ability to take you just as rapidly back down to a safe speed. They will not admit the goof but is in fact the reason that they only made the vehicle in one production year.

rbn3,
I also like the manually adjustable driver's side mirror. (I had a power mirror on a Acura Legend once that was ergonomically SO bad; I would have to take my eyse off the road for three or four secondss justt to find the switch). It speaks to the best engineering standard-don't build things that are not needed. Considering the cost of electronics, less is more, in my opinion.

PS Lucky Strike, what are you asking for the 94?

I disagree with Tom

T-man,

apparently you haven't had 3 of those manual mirrors break on you, eh? I had it break on each of my W124s (500E, 300TE, 300E 2.5TD) and it cost something like $200+ to replace. maybe the power mirror's not so bad?

And to all the "newbies", welcome aboard!

Oh, and BTW I thought that I'd add that, at 136k miles, my car's in for a new transmission and rebuild of the engine. Motor's apart, and unbelievably there was little or no timing chain stretch (oil pump chained was stretched a bit, though) and the T-chain guides looked great. However, I may have had 1 bum fuel injector, as one cylinder had run hot enough to melt a plug. Otherwise, the bottom end was as-new (no play anywhere) so the main & rod bearings remain; the wiring harness was fine too, but the engine was leaking oil & coolant down the sides of the block. So, it gets new head gaskets, new T-chain & all guides, oil pump, all the EGR pipes (brittle as could be), knock sensor (wiring harness falling apart), etc. Trans is now 600SL-spec (different clutch basket w/ 1 additional friction plate) and everything goes back in next week or so. I'll let the board know how it all works out...but I'm sure it'll be fine. It's being rebuilt by another 500E owner!!

500E/E500 registry

All,

I am working on the back-end (prerequisite) pieces to facilitate a MySQL database (+ PHP --> HTML), which I will
deploy, ASAP, as a 500E/E500 registry - on my W124-036 board:

https://ssl.500Ecstasy.com/forums

Though it is NOT yet live/functional, I will re-post an advisory when it is available for use - which I estimate to be NLT 01MAR04.

It is my hope that every 500E/E500 owner from this, and as many other boards/forums as possible (worldwide) will submit their data.

Thank you,
