What's this car? Odd W124 AMG
I'm trying to figure out what this car is.
Sorry for the bad picture, the digital zoom on my mobile phone is poor! It's a pre-facelift W124, and too old to be an E36 AMG. It has AMG wheels but they say 'AKG' or something on where they should say AMG, so maybe replicas. It has an AMG badge on the back. So I would assume it's just a ghetto'd up 300E or 230E with the 'popular' SEC front-end conversion, but A) It lives in a distinctly non-ghetto area of holiday homes in a Welsh coastal town B) It has the AMG ducktail, and original '80s AMG steering wheel, which I hear is very hard to come by C) It has a white rim/edging around all the leather on the seats - again more like original AMG treatment than aftermarket accessorizing. Would someone be likely to order this AMG-ized car new, without any sort of engine upgrade? Russ

I put it through a number plate search thingy.. it says it's a 1990 260E, engine size 2599cc.
Just another 124 oddball I guess.

I don't think any changes to the engine size would show up on a number (VIN) search would it? Here in the U.S. it certainly wouldn't but maybe there it has to due to taxes. An AMG Hammer would simply show up as a 3.0L 6cyl on a VIN check here.

Yes, you would only have to pay for a 300E's insurance.... BUT... if you were to total it you'd be screwed because you'd obviously only get what a 300E with that mileage is worth from your insurance company. This is why most owners opt to up their policy worth. The guy that wrecked the 560SEC AMG car I bought at the insurance lot had it insured for $40K so he just bought another one (the white one on ebay all the time.) When I was doing my buildup I just left it insured as a 500SEC but I will be upping the value as soon as its 100% complete and driven on a regular basis.
