Please Help ASAP!
Hi,
Pleae help. I need advice/precautions on putting Jamex Springs (drop the car 1.5") into a 1995 C280. Most importantly I need to know whether my tires will rub or hit the fender wells. I am wearing 16x7 in 205/55 up front and 16x8 in 225/50 in the rear. My mechanic thinks the car is fine now with Bilstein Hd's in it (which made a huge improvement in the ride and handling) but I want to lower it and hope I can still drive the car normally except for slowing down for depressions/upheavals in the pavement. Please help- I want to lower my car and get rid of the remaining fender well gap, but want to be able to drive the car normally that is be able to drive on broken pavement and uneven roads without runing the rims or tires from rubbing. Also realistically, what can I expect in the ride quality. I know I can expect much better cornering and handling, but I don't want the ride to be as rough as a truck. Please help. Any advice/comments on the "real deal with this lowering" I will very much appreciate. Thanks, Troy [Edited by troydewan on 01-06-2001 at 05:19 PM] |

I have seen this done on the SL's with no problems. These cars had the stock tires though.
Good luck.

I have something similar
Troy,
I own a 1993 C250D which is lowered about 5/6cm in the front. My car has eibach springs, koni (yellow) adjustable shocks and 8mm spring pads. The wheels underneath the car are 7,5Jx17"ET35 with tires 205/45-17. I own three sets of 17" wheels and one set has got an ET37 size. With 205's in rear nothing is wrong, but with 225 tires on a ET37 wheel you could get in trouble. A set of wheels with an ET35 size should be able to have 225 tires without hitting the fenders...after severe lowering. The front tires on 7J wheels will definitely not hit the fenders and the rear tires depend on the ET size of your wheels. If you have ET37 wheels the wheel sticks out more to the outside as an ET35 wheel. According to the mercedes specs you need to do something with the fenders as soon as you mount 7,5Jx17" AMG wheels, but mostly that is not necessary, but 8J....? Lowering the car that much gives a rougher ride, but since I lowered my car that much and drive about 1500-2000km per week I can say that it is still a decent quality. The handling however is suburb; lowering the car did not gain that much handling, but the yellow KONI shocks made it possible to fly through high-speed bends again (something I missed since I sold my 190D). Furthermore it is worth to exchange your isolation plate under the engine for a steel carter protection plate if you lower the car that much! It eliminates the chance of breaking the carter over bumps or stones! It is an OEM part which can be ordered by every dealer (or MB shop). I can give you the part# if you like... greetingz & good luck,
