is this physically possible?

I'm new to this forum business, so this idea may sound like I've inhaled too many diesel fumes. I have an '83 300TD with an automatic transmission(yawn). Is there any way to swap in a manual tranny from a similar model car (240D, 300D, etc.)? Can a dealer do this? Can I do this (without going insane)? Thanks. Go Raikkonen.

yes. My dad has done at least two but they were for 300D turbos. I think you have to re-balance the flywheel among other things. I don't get the impression that it is easy to do. Actually I think you can get a 300TD wagon with it already installed. My mom is driving one right now as a loaner.

Yes, it is possible and yes, the flywheel must be balanced. We are completing such a project on a 1979 240D with 17566 ORIGINAL miles on it and 4-speed manual gearbox. The customer purchased a newly rebuilt 300D Turbodiesel 617 engine to integrate into the car.

it is

pretty straightforward actually.

although skinnerox says that the 240 flywheel must be balanced with the crank, folks have done quite a few of them wo doing that and had good rusults. personally i have had a 240 flywheel checked for balance by my machine shop and they found it to be neutrally balanced, no balancing needed. the 617 motor calls for a neutrally balanced flywheel so i am clear to use it. i may do so soon but havent decided yet.

if you want to be absoulutly safe take your 240 fw and have it checked. personally i think the fsm says to balance them together as a precaution. i think that most are neutral but they reserve the right to use a crank that is a little off from the factory by balancing it with the flywheel but this is apparantely not needed much.

good luck. the stick transforms the car in a very good way. imho. id id a na 617 stic into 83 240d. turned out very nice. dr0ove it 30k and recently sold it along to free up driveway space and capital.
