600lb-ft Auto tranny buildup?

Hey all,
I'm contemplating doing a TT or a Supercharged build-up on an M117, and it seems like it should be good for (well over) 600lb-ft of torque...
What I'd like to know is what are my best options for the tranny without blowing the budget? W126 tranny with upgraded clutch discs? W140 V12 tranny? a 5 spd auto? If so can I get it to work without all the PITA electronics? Please advise, and keep in mind that I don't want to spend more on the tranny than on the engine

The two bands aside (I haven't seen a smoked band that wasn't caused by a fool, typically towing in OD in trucks), I haven't seen performance/HP clutch packs for the 722 transmission as they're not used in that application. You're probably going to have to stick with a standard kit from BW or Alto and have everything clearanced properly unless you can crossreference something from the domestic end that can fit, as there's a plethroa of stuff available. If you do find something, stick to the standard thickness steels and standard thickness clutches as they tend to dissipate heat better than the very thin units do. For some reason the thin ones have more holding capacity but can't transfer the heat out to resist burning up on smaller transmissions.

The unit itself is pretty stout overall, but with that much input torque you'll be on the fatigue life on many pieces not designed for that load... planetary gear sets, input shaft, etc. Cryo treatment can rectify that easily but costs money.

I believe that trans behind the V12 wasn't too much beefier due to all the computer controls available (basically TorqueManagement or whatever MB calls it) to reduce load at the shift, thus less power.

Don't forget about a stronger converter, that much torque will make the stocker balloon under load and eventually self destruct also. It's not pretty when a coverter goes south.

Just my 2¢ for now...

Also, the V12 722.3 transmission from a W140.057 600SEL or R129.076 600SL will NOT bolt up to any V8 M116, M117, or M119. The bell housing on the V12 engine/transmission union is unique, substancially to the V12.

Satish,
Yeah, that hit me a couple of days ago. It is unlikely that a 60 degree V12 would share the same bellhousing as a 90 degree V8. With that said, how much power/torque would a stock 722.370 be good for? What about a built one?

If you click on stummala's link, I think you'll see the installation of a V12 in his 560 SEC.

honestly your best bet might be to find an adaptor plate to fit a 6 spd viper transmission up to the motor. I think there is somebody on here already doing the machining work on a piece.

the T-56 is too long, the shifter would end up too far backwards...

The Viper T56 isn't too much better than a T56 you can yank from an LS1 F-body. A few internals are beefier but not a lot.

If you can find one, the cost is sure to be absurd due to "ViperTax". You'd be better off having a T56 from G-Force built for you, it'd be stronger and cost less.
