I have a located a low mileage 500E Motor, Transmission & Differential.

In order to transplant to a 400E, what could be the problem areas ?

Should it be a straight forward transplant?

Any and all ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Saliya

I'm not sure if it is possible. the chassis may need to be reworked to fit that engine as well as other things.

You might be better off buying a 500e versus trying to do a swap of engine/drivetrain... the cost of the engine plus the cost of the swap, might not be worth it.

lets say you get 17k for your car, plus lets say 5k for the motor and drivetrain and another 3k for installation. not to mention other parts that may be needed,

So lets assume 25k is the magic number completed. you could easily pick up a 92 500e for that with decent mileage... I've looked at autotrader and seen a few under 25k, with 70-150k miles on them...

I'm not a tech or an expert, but in my opinion doing a swap like that is probably not economical when you can get the whole car and all of its advantages, suspension, flared fenders, driving lights for a slight difference in price.

I've seen some very nice 500e's with less than 70k on them for around 30k or so, give or take a few k.

I think you'll be fine! Just re-read the entire MBZ Service Manual "Model Year 1992 Introduction into Service Models 124.034/036 (400E/500E)" for ya.

This publication enumerates the vast majority of modifications made for these cars. And near as I can tell, the drivetrain should bolt right in...and according to another member of the board, the 400E LH Injection Module works fine for a 500E, too, so the electronics are likely interchangeable.

Y'know, if that's a '92 motor it's a PERFECT donor motor for a 6.0-6.5 reworking...food for thought
