83 300D deisel performance

Hello,

I have a 1983 benz 300D. This car is in excellent shape, rides wonderfully and comfortably, but could use some more power.

Filters have been replaced and the car runs smooth, but after puting a bullydog 6 position chip in my F-350, i'm eager for some deisel performance out of this benz.

What is the potential of the stock injector pump? Are there any mods that can be performed that give decent power increases?

I know free flowing exhaust systems make markable improvements on turbocharged motors, does this apply to my benz?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

I have found many discussions but i am having trouble deciphering which engine the 1983 300D has. I believe its a 3.0L and is factory turbo charged.

Right

Right it is a factory turbo 5-cylinder engine there are some great pictorial how to post for everything from properly adjusting the turbo charger To making unauthorized adjustments to the injection pump. On a solid engine you can safely (there is debate on that) get an extra 60 extra HP in a weekend of work for under a hundred bucks if your handy with tools and have the ability to fabricate some tools such as the one you need to pump up the IP. There are 400 HP cars over seas a lot of 200 HP cars in the states.
Search injection pump waste gate turbo boost look in the DYI section of diesel discussion also a member Brandon I think is his name did a great how to article on getting big HP by adjusting the IP. Then add an intercooler, custom rebuilt or bigger turbochargers use a woodruff key to advance the cam timing adjust the IP timing for speed. Balance your injectors and on it goes. 1 solid engine in great shape 2 clean test and balance fuel injectors 3 Adjust injection pump internally for more fuel. Those three things and you will be pleased with your performance increase.
If you still cannot find these posts ask and I will link you to 5 or 6 of the best out of the 60 or 70 good post on this.

only the Euro modles in 83 had the non-turbo OM617, the US models had the turbo version...(and yes there are many internal differences)

Sorry, i should have specified what i meant by engine type.

I'm guessing the 617 is the name of this specific motor from the information i've gathered.

I'm interested in intercooling the engine, which is something i can easily accomplish myself, but the IP adjustments are what interest me. Your guys' conversation on the matter is very informative.

Thanks for the help so far guys, i really appreciate it.

I wish i bought my boss's 1984. If i knew he was going to let it go for $800 i would have absolutely taken it.

First thing I would do is do a search in the Diesel section for "ALDA" and "banjo bolt". Those are the easiest things to do and will make a noticable difference on most cars. Good luck and have fun.

Yes, the engine is a 617 or actually it's an OM 617.952 I believe.

Actually the ALDA was the first thing i tinkered with.

After adjusting it and seeing the smile on my face, I found this page.

The intercooler and full load adjustments are planned for the spring/summer.

Thanks guys!
