Water Injection Questions

Hey,

A few questions about WI. I ask people and get vague advice...

What type of nozzle should I use to inject the liquid into the intake stream? I assume it will have to atomie the liquid fairly fine to prevent drowning the engine.

Some guys use windshield washer fluid because it contains alcohol. I'm experimenting with Biodiesel, which requires Methanol (essentially alcohol) if I mixed that with water would that work?

Just some dumb questions for ya...

GTB

Hi GTB,
Here is a link that will show you how to construct a water injection system for you vehicle.
http://www.turbomirage.com/water.html
Here's a company that will sell you the correct nozzles based on your engine specs.

Don't go cheap on the nozzle or the pump. The more pressure and atomization the better! I wouldn't suggest using windshield washer fluid because it contains salts, dyes and solvents that shouldn't be in your engine. Yes, you can mix methanol with water and use that. If you want even more info, do a search on google. There is a lot of info on this subject.

There is a nice water injection forum http://www.waterinjection.info/phpBB2/

What engine are you trying water injection on? OM617???

I 'm not sure how well it will work with a prechamber. I don't know of any people doing this.

EDIT: If you have a turbo I wouldn't recomend a pre-turbo injection setup. People that do this are noticing wear and tear on their compressor wheels and injesting bits of compressor wheel can't be good for your cylinders.

found this picture of a compressor wheel after a year of pre turbo water injection.

Ouch!

Yeah,,, I would highly NOT suggest pre turbo water injection. I would imagine nearing 80,000 RPM, water droplets would act like sand!

That just proves we need smoke free driving zones! All hot engine compartments accumulate oil vapors and carbon buildup. Theres not much you can do about it. The water injection probably helped clean it up! Destroyed the turbo though...

yeah, the onlything that is gonna go thru my turbo is AIR lots and lots of it.
I was thinkin something that would to into a bung just after the turbo outlet.
a buddy of mine says an oil furnace nozzle would do the trick...I'll have to do some research.
just a thought...I have many that never really come to fruition...

Think PCV .

At least compressor wheels are not all too expensive. To replace the one on my 300 SD its only like $75. Of course its gotta be a pain to rebuild the turbo once a year.
