Ceramic Coatings

Ok guys im not sure where this post belongs most, but I'll give it a try here. Maybe some of you guys have had experience with having parts ceramic coated.

I am finishing off the cosmetic touch ups on my w123 sedan... the car looks 100% new. BUT, my exhaust muffler and tail pipe are in sad shape.... the paint on the muffler has worn thin in areas, and there is some minor corrosion on the bellyside since it gets the most wear and tear from facing the road.

I know that what I would like to do is far from stock in terms of finish, but I think that it may look nice to have a new muffler installed that has been coated with a high-temp resistant ceramic coating- in either a chrome/aluminum finish or semi-gloss black. The end result in the chrome/aluminum finish would really brighten the underside of the car- since the lower portion of the muffler can bee seen when looking at the drivers side of the car, and the exhaust being visible from the rear....

My question is this:

Has anybody here ever had any parts that endure high temperatures coated with a ceramic coating?

appx. how hot does the exhaust muffler on a w123 turbodiesel get? Id like to have a coating applied that can withstand the high temperature at which the muffler gets when the car is running.

Are there any companies that can be reccomended for ceramic coating?
I have looked at Jet-Hot and they quoted me roughly $100.00 to have the muffler and tail pipe coated.

thanks!

HI I'm just-n-time a former trucker in the heavy haul devision,I ran an old style cumins Eng.at over six hundred horse, this power plant pulled some very high heat.ceramic top coat and Teflon side coating is the only way to deal with heat on the pistons and friction ,in the cylinder coating the exhaust system and wrapping the turbo to get a greater scavenge is also part of the package

Ceramic coating is typically reserved for the exhaust manifold/headers, since the effect is to increase the internal temp of the exhaust to better scavange the exhaust gases. Downstream of the header, you're mostly dealing with cosmetics and external corrosion protection, but $100 doesn't sound too bad compared to other high temp coatings such as paints and powdercoating.

there are also some high quality paints for exhuast things. but before i spent a hundred coating i would look into stainless. prob not any more than the muff plus coating and wont rust inside.

I agree with the last two,the idea of ceramic coating the muffler is not cost efficient.Get a book from Eastwood they carry allot of great products to use
in this area.just-n-time.

Still $100 for the product and labor (and probably some kind of warranty of workmanship) isn't that extravagant. A few rattle cans of high temp paint is cheaper, but considering the prep work, the time it takes and other factors, $100 isn't a bad price.

Try Swain Coatings:

http://www.swaintech.com/

I use them for my RX7 twin-turbo exhaust, and while not pretty likc Jet Hot's, much more functional.

A turbo'd rotary runs VERY VERY hot.

I second that,
Swaintech coatings rock! It's the best stuff out there. Unfortunately it's not as pretty as Jet-Hot but the thermal properties are far superior. The Swain stuff is flat white versus Jet-Hot's glossy sterling silver. both coatings are good but I'd go with Swain for all out performance.

I went with Performance Coatings in WA for my header. It was mainly beause Jet Hot didn't offer the color I was looking for(and they were more expensive). I paid $125(Jet Hot was like $165).

Very nice looking, itgb. How does that type of treatment hold up? I've read some posts here and there about SS exhaust systems. Does your coating only cover the headers or does it go all the way back to the end of the pipes?

Thanks. Honestly I haven't put that many miles on the new header(only the header is coated). Maybe 3-5k miles, so I can't really say how it will hold up.
