This is a follow-up on the klatta-klatta noise that our C36 is making.
We've noticed that it only makes it during idle, and it sounds like its coming from the timing chain/cam sprocket area. Via the diagnostic port, we can activate/de-activate the cam-advance solenoid. When activated, the sound is gone. When de-activated, the sound comes back. Does the intake cam sprocket assembly get noisy, or could this be chain stretch? Could this contribute to no high-end "umph"? Our only testing is with the stock 300TE exhaust (single cat, single O2-sensor), so we are now fabricating a dual-cat and dual O2-sensor free-flow exhaust that will mimick the C36 exhaust system. Any other ideas? Thanks, :-) neil 1988 300TE w/AMG'd M104 (aka, C36) |

Neil,
Though I never detected the sound you described, my 95 C36 did have some problems with the valve timing/advance. Message Donnie/Benzmac in tech help, he should be more familiar with the specifics. Mine was not advancing the cam as it should and there was a VERY noticeable high rpm power loss. Hope this helps, Lee |

Sadly to report the klatta klatta noise is an abnormality. The service advisor said that it's the timing chain or something of the other...All i know is that it costs Mucho denero! Crud, and i just paid for 4 new rotors and pads! All this within a week, my wallet can barely stay afloat.
But then the road beckons me to quickly get back on! |

Well, the klatta-klatta noise is still there. We re-installed the chain tensioner (it was too tight), and reset the timing chain (no stretch) and it's still there.
Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks, :-) neil |

Take those baseball cards outta your rims.
hehehe I do notice that my 97 C36 also has klatta sounds when idle. Also I have been to every MB service scheduled and the idel isn't what it use to be. I use to have to think twice before knowing that the car is on...but now I KNOW the car is on. Oh well.

Hey guys,
I don't have the noises that you guys, have. Although I did have some noises before, but then I found out that the belt tensioner need to be replaced. So I brought the car to the dealer, and they replaced it for free (it was still under warranty) Probably you guy want to check out you tensioner as well. Regardz, J Irwan |

Yep, i use to have the klatta noise as well, but M-B service technician discovered it to be a bad timing advancement thingy! It affected the high rpm power. It's fixed but now there is a faulty coil!
