1979 300CD - Turbo?
I have a 1979 Mercedes 300CD, ive noticed in the past few years that its started to get less powerful. Any common things I should be checking to see what the power loss is attributed to?
Ive also noticed that there was a 300CD turbo released in later years. Will the turbo from these cars fit mine? |

generally yes.
there are differences in the way various accessories mount, like the ac and probably some other things so it may be a bit of work but the big things are the same. some folks have done similar swaps so they will chime in and make comments. you will need to change for sure to do it right the rear end, tranny and speedo to make it all right. the rad may be different too. and exhaust. best to start with a complete parts car soyou will have all the little parts needed. goos luck tom w

To clarify a few things mentioned earlier, the turbo could be bolted to the non turbo engine but that engine is not up to the task of holding up to the boost. The turbo engine is built much more solidly and a swap is the olny real consideration when going from non to turbo. Unfortunately the nonturbo trans isn't up to the task of holing all that torque from a turbo engine so again a swap is in order. As mentioned earlier a donor car is the only way this swap will be economicly feasable. The good news is that all the stuff will swap with only minimal fabrication if any. If the CD has a good body I'd say go for it, a cosmeticly rough donor could be had for not too much money.

Probably not in my budget right now sadly to do a swap, but yes, the CD does have a pretty nice body.
Any ideas on the more recent loss of power? I just changed the air filter Last edited by kawasakiguy37; 07-09-2006 at 11:23 PM. |

only 3 things in there to make power..air, fuel and compression. If you have been losing power you either have a lack of air getting in, a lack of fuel or a lack of compression.
When were your fuel filters done last? How old are the injectors? When were your valves clearences checked last? How much blow by when hot? Jonathan

Fuel filters were done recently, injectors and the other things I have no idea. Imm thinking of doing a diesel purge as recommended by many others - Good idea? The thing has at least 160000 miles and I dont believe this has ever been done to it.

A purge is nice but I'd wager your valves are in Serious need of adjusting...
I'd do both IMO. Jonathan

I'd start with a purge and a valve adjustment. Then replace the vacuum line conections. Refer to dieselgiant.com the guy is a diehard and also supplys parts and other info(dvd's and online tutorials)
