91 500SL mods

New to the forum and new owner of a 91 500SL.

Any ideas to increase horsepower on this car?

Looks like pre 92's may not be able to be chipped, or is there a way??

Thanks

Thumbs up

I recall hearing that a crankshaft from a 5.6L M117 engine can be used to increase the stroke on the 5.0L M119. I have no idea if this is true or not but it will give you something to research.
The other option which would give you more bang for your buck is a custom low boost supercharger and an EFI conversion (>350kW at the crank).
Take the car down to your local performance tuner and get a quote.

Depends how much money you can spend to make it faster...
If not too much then you should get some refreshing done (port+polish, valve check etc)
But If you have a lot money that you wanna spend on it, then i would get the m117 5.6 crank, bore the block to 100mm (displacement of 6.0 with m117 crank), custom rods, custom pistons, head job, programmable efi and twin turbos....then we can talk about some seriuous power 800+hp or somethind like that..
by the way the pre 93 m119 engine is the best to do the boreing because the cilinder walls are thicker than 93-> year M119...
sorry for my shi*ty english

Indeed..there is no cheap speed to be had from an M119 w/ CISE (or any mercedes for that matter).

Best place to start is how much $$$$ to you want to spend?

THanks

Thanks for the feedback guys, this is what I figured. If I could get a nice HP boost for $1-2k that would be great. I jsut bought the car 3 weeks ago, so I probably just need to enjoy next summer for some time as is.

1-2K won't get you far w/ that... Best bet would be a free flowing exhaust for that sort of $$. Perhaps a 50hp nitrous shot..

IŽd invest that 2k to refreshing the engine up. That year 500-s need new wiring harness, caps and rotor, sparkplugs, new gasgets & full head job and it would be excelent.
I just did this work on my engine and the car went fast overnight
Especially the throttle responce is fast (Y)

All of the items listed above Grossly exceed his 2K budget.. Heads on an M119..that's a 5K job right there.

I've got a question about boring the block. Does this block use steel liners or is it the silicon embeded aluminum (I think) the new ones use and if it is, how do you bore it?

Buy some Remus muffler(s) and get 3/3.25" bent up to it. Usually cheaper than a pre assembled system too. Around here, the guy keeps trying to push this magnaflow or flowmaster garbage on me...
