motor weights

I'm wondering if anyone knows the weights of the m117 5.6L, m103 2.6L and m104 3.2L blocks? Thanks in advance, as I haven't been able to find any trustworthy figures on my own search.

within the last six months i believe a comprehensive list has been posted. you will find i believe that the alloy block v8s dont weigh a lot more than the iron block sixes. the overall weight increase in the cars is partially attributable to heavier duty trannys rear ends brakes wheels etc being used along with the bigger displacement engines.

and i think it is true that none of the gassers weigh as much as the diesels.

good luck

thanks! I did run across that list, but wasn't sure if it was accurate or not. I will search for it again

Post the link when you find it. I've not been able to find a reasonably accurate weight for an aluminum M117 engine.

I'd be curious to see what they state for transmission weight as well. I have the 723 tranny in the garage and only have to take a bathroom scale out to weigh it. That will give me an indication of the accuracy of the list vs. my empirical data.

Thanks

Thanks 300Evil, that's what I was looking for. I have an LS6 engine going into the SEC and it looks like it is about 20 pounds lighter (434)than the M117 (452). The H&R springs won't need modifications when the new parts are in there.

Sometime this week I will have the weights of both the 5.6L alloy M-117 Engine and tranny and the M120 engine and trany. They will be weighed dry with all accesories and I will post pictures of how they are weighed so you will know what is included.

Stay tuned

M117 Engine and Trans Weight

Gentelmen as prommised

The Alloy 5.6L M117 engine and trans with all accesories weighs 661.4LB as shown in the photo just after being pulled.

Note this is a 1986 M117 freshly pulled out of a 1986 560SL (California car).

The weight includes all accesories belts. aircleaner and exhaust manifolds. Everything as pictured. It does not include a fan or fan clutch or fluids.

I will be pulling a transmission out of an 1988 560SL soon so I will get the weight of that shortly and you can subtract to get engine only weight.

Watch for M120 weight post possibly tonight.

I just weighed the fan and clutch for this engine it was 5 Lb. Therefore this engine and transmission with all accesories and fan and clutch weighs 666.4Lb

M120 Engine Weight

Well here you go. This is the weight of the M120 Engine removed from a 1996 SL600 California Car. The weight contains everything including acsessories. The fan, starter and AC compressor are just laid on top to get the total weight. Again the engine is dry but it also includes my engine stand fitting which I did not take off for this weighing. When I do take it off I will weigh it and report but I wont have that number for about 2 weeks. The 2 MAF sensors and air cleaners are also not included in this weight. The ring gear and flex plate is installed. The engine mount stands have also been replaced by temporary steel weldments that I estimate weigh about the same as the aluminium castings.

I weighed the engine stand fitting at 13 Lb this weight gets subtracted.

The weight comes out to be 667 LB - 13 lb for engine stand fitting = ~ 654Lb as shown.

Difference between SL600 and 560SL engines and Trans

So it apears that by the weights I taken so far when I consider I still need to add the weight of the airfilters and computer box, I will need to make up ~ 175Lb on my front springs for the 560SL. Does anyone have the weight of a late model 450SL iron block engine preferably with accessories and trans.

nice, this FIRST HAND info!

I would weigh my m119, but I dont have such a big scale anywhere in the neighbourhood.....

rough guess: 661-169=492 for a M117 complete, without trans, and dry

Add 30 LBs for the 4-valve heads of the m119:

about 520 for a M119, roughly estimated

Anyone (dis)agree?
