500E cool air induction
I have seen some very cool noninvasive cool air ducting on this site ( below the headlights GREAT JOBS ! ). I was thinking about the side air vent used on certain turbo disel model eclass cars. I know that the fender flares on the 500E/E500 may present a problem but has anyone looked into this before?.
Also I am at present cutting blank 300E filler panels ( the ones beneath the headlights ) to make a cold air induction system for my 500E. Does anyone know where I can buy some stock of the chrome mesh similar to that use on the grill of some of the newer turbo jags ?. I need about an 8.5 x 11 piece ( okay 2 in case I #@&%(*&) UP! ). Thanks Alan

Similar
2Phast , We emailed back and forth late last summer and you as well as your site have been very helpful. From the photos I could not tell the design or style of mesh you used. I love the look of you car but at the moment my car will have some of the original crome trim ( slight though they may be) so I thought the wire chrome grill used on the jags would look good. Is that the same material ?.
Thanks again Alan

If you look at the vent section of my web site, you can see a picture of what I used for the mesh. Its basically a air vent for the home, souced from Home Depot. I just searched around till I found something that was large enough so I could cut it to fit. I wanted max airflow and something easy to cut/shape. I used JB Weld to secure it in place.

that is friggin sweet! I havn't looked, but do you think it's possible to do that but leave the headlight wipers in place and just work around them? like I said, I havn't look, so sorry if it's a stupid question...

Sure you could, but it would be a useless mod unless you own a 500E. You see, the 500E ducts in air from around the headlights. Still would "look" cool on a 300E though.

yeah, I was thinking about tying in the custom intakes into the current air filter, or maybe a turbo in the future

I am about to start my mod for the cool air intake as soon as I finish getting the carb back on my 68 Caddy ( sadly it is going up for sale in the coming weeks ). As soon as done i will post some photos.

Good point. The reason I was thinking a chrome finish is durability , and it would match the chrome strip at the bumper ( just below wipers ) as well as the chrome strips on the grill and grill shell. I am undecided but will update.
