Speaking of progress updates, my car was back at the dyno during the week but it was making a lot of noise at high revs so they aborted the tune. The turbos are now off the car and being inspected by a specialist. I don't yet know what the issue is but it may be compressor wheel damage sustained when the vaccum hose came loose which caused the engine to ping while limping back to the workshop. It might also be that the units, which were selected for a 3.2L 7psi application are being spun past their 100,000rpm balance rating by my 3.5L 14psi install.
My mechanic believes it's nothing major so he has gone ahead and re-booked the final dyno for this Wednesday. Unfortunately there's just no room to swap larger turbos in, the rear unit is already a very tight squeeze. |
Dear Ortolan,
Just curious how the second (rear) manifold can run past through tight room between steering box and wall. Because ur car is right hand drive right? Could you give a one pic of that? Thx. |

Most who follow this thread are in the process of, or interested in the Turbotechnics installation on the M103-12V and M104-24V I6's. I probably finished my install first ( M103-12V ) about eight months ago. We all communicate to resolve "problems" that are part of a kit that was produced in 1992. There are are poor instructions and documentation, mismatched parts, and ways to do things that weren't available sixteen years ago. The individual that you responded to ( not taking sides, just being informative ) will be doing a TT install on a custom wide body coupe.... We're all here to learn....so no reason to fight !! It was commissioned and sold/installed exclusively by U.K. Merc dealer "Hughes of Beaconsfield " in the early nineties. All who are doing installs now, took advantage of an inventory clearance sale by their parts department ! Pic of my M103-12V install on a 1988 300CE LHD gives you an idea of how high the turbos are mounted. Period kits like Mosselman, designed for left hand drive cars mounted the turbos much lower. I still don't know exactly what caused the issue with the turbos, hope to find out on Saturday. If the damage was caused by the vacuum hose coming loose, who is responsible for the additional costs?
Dyno has been booked for Wednesday. It'll be nice to rev the engine all the way up! |
good day ,
i have followed this forum for a little less than a year, with an absence a several months . i was quite shocked with the direction this forum has taken. but lets get past that . i am very interested in learning how folks have made out with the tt kits . i myself took delivery of one in may 07 ,i installed it the same weekend with the exception of the afore mentioned oil fitting anomoly.i retained compression ratio . monday afternoon i test drove it. my main advice here is have your teeth cleaned first, your smile can been seen from space. this was , however ,short lived.the air by pass hose from the idle air valve blew off. many years of vacuum ,now positive pressure.oh well.hose clamps. i entered this project knowing it was not for the faint of heart,i installed the kit on an old car as a test bed,i added e420 brakes ,some newer clk 16" rims ,played with pressure switches and so on . i would love to have some help with engine mangement, the suggestions here on aqua mist system intrigue me.i would share any insight i have incurred quite readily. i personally like an understated car you can pick up visitors at the airport in[i'm in florida ,so that is common] i have seen the work by pumpish and that is in my opinion pure mechanical/maniacal art ,it is hardcore brilliance ,it's just not my daily driver .if i were a wealthy man i would commission a car from him ,however i am not . i am a bit of a purist and i feel privileged to own one of these few kits . I am preparing a newly purchased 300e ,low mileage ,to received my collection of parts . at first i will fit only brakes rims and exhaust, this time i am going to prep an engine with lower compression ratio i have a two 300e's and an e320[wifes], so this is a bonus car and time is not an issue. thank you for your time mike |
Öhm. Interesting thead to read, but so much extra angry talk which should be cleared by moderators.
English is already difficult for some readers.:) |

M103-12V or M104-24V? Either way, don't bother with the ERL Aquamist as it's not 3D mappable as the AFR is set by potentiometers. Spend $350.00 for the Split Second AIC1-A2L. It's a stand alone additional injector controller. Replaces all the poor performing antiquated electronics, Hobbs switches, and interface with the stock ECU. The unit has a self contained MAP sensor and only requires manifold vacuum, +/- 12VDC, engine speed signal and wiring to the additional injector(s). Program the supplied software with your laptop and lock in 12.5:1 AFR under boost. If you have a M103-12V there are a few other mods that will pick up about ten more horsepower and twenty lbft torque. You will no longer retard the timing as the TT control does via a Hobbs switch. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b183/rbycc/TTCM10.jpg |
rbycc thank you.
this is the type of info i need for my m103 12v.the test install was an exciting drive but not a smooth power band ,and not just turbo lag.any and all help is greatly appreciated. i am not i a hurry ,this is for fun . the aqua mist was my mistake as i had seen a previous post of yours ,sorry. thank you for your time mike |

Once you're set up the acceleration should be extremely smooth and not even noticing when the turbo boost begins. Pull out the supplied Fram panel filter and replace it with a K&N 33-2003 unit. You'll notice the depth of the Fram filter actually blocks the lower intake opening of the filter housing. In essence it's trying to draw intake air into the side of the filter. Do this change first and see if you notice a difference. The turbos have to breathe !!!! You can see what I mean about the filter blocking the outside air intake opening. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...cc/TTCM3-1.jpg Definitely want to use the Split second unit. On the dyno, reading AFR's through the RPM range, the supplied electronics were all over the place. I believe they used the Hobbs switch to retard timing because they could enrich enough under boost. With the Split Second timing remains stock, and if you remove the R16 resistor you may pull a few more degrees advance. Properly set up you should run low to mid five second 0-60 times depending on ambient temp. You're in Florida so you will never realize how much power 40 degree air gives you !!! Try the inexpensive filter change and see if any improvement. Next step is to smooth the air flow by getting rid of the supplied old style coil hoses !! Ed A. |
I've experienced a bit more power on the dyno using Aquamist water injection.
1 gallon Aquamist nozzle and -15'C windshield washer liquid. The exhaust temperature decreased about 50'C (temp sensor mounted on downpipe). |
Car was back on the dyno today and the run had to be aborted AGAIN.
This time I'm told the exhaust wheels aren't big enough to rev past 5000. My mechanic and I are particularly irate about this as the turbo specialist that recently upgraded the compressor wheels said the exhaust wheels would be fine! I'm seriously going to start hurting people soon if this @#$%@ goes on much longer! |
I'm not familar with these turbo's, but by the looks they seem to be way small for your displacement (at least for 400bhp).
The boost decrease in your dyno sheets should give your turbo spesialist some kind of indication If you manage to keep the boost down to 4-5 psi (?) there may be acceptable conditions for her to rev all the way to redline |
Hello from Finland
I changed my plans about my M103 (thanks to you guys)... I have sold my crazy Holset hx55 to my friend`s 2,7litre BMW (comes whith special ext housing). Then I bought two beautiful schwither s100bg:s (power from low revs). |
