Hi everyone, just got back from Hiltenhead, SC great weeks vacation, now back to the real world. (Hope Mr. Swenford is still OK.) My question is this, I was under my car checking it out upon return from vacation, (it'a still cool). I found a vent hose on the right side bottom of the air dam. It does not attach to anything and it is made of solid metal about three inches in diameter. By the way my car is a 1985 190E 2.3 8V. Just a thought for you guys that were talking about forced air or ram air induction, it seems that the setup is already there. The tube is about 2 1/2 feet long and it runs from the right front airdam at the bottom of the car straight back to just above the right front axle. All that is need on my car is a flexible tube of about four feet and some modifications at the breather. This tube appears to be original equipment. Any comments appreciated. Thank you.

Well I have something similar on the right hand side of the cra in the airdam.

I think its either for extra airflow, brake cooling, or for cooling something else.

Either way, I have no clue if its hooked up to anything or not, I havent incestigated mine.

The Spider Died!

Brotner of The benz, Dorsey.
Thank you Dorsey I've recovered from the Spider bite. And the Spider did die.
You have standard what I have done to my 300E.
You can get an expandable 3" aluminum tube from The Sears Hardware Store. It stretches to approximately 6'.
I installed a new air intake nozzle and took the old unit and modified it to enter in a hole at the rear of the filter housing for a second "Ram Air" Intake.

AIR INTAKE

Hi Mr. Swenford, glad to hear you are OK again. Hope your weather is as enjoyable as mine is right now. Hey thanks for the reply on the air intake. I was going crazy trying to get a handle on what that intake was for, it's just sitting there. When you hooked up your system to it did you notice any change in torque? Also Mr Swenford, I beleive it was you a while back talking about "Grey Market" lights or something and you said if anyone wanted info to ask, so I'm asking. I think you wanted to E-mail off forum. Well hope to hear from you soon, stay well!! "El Cheapo from Philly"

Dorsey,

I was under the hood today doing a plug change, and I followed that air tube. on my car it comes out right by the motor mount on the right hand side of the engine, which is right by the exhaust, so I assume it is to help cool the exhaust some.

Cool it baby!!

It's there to cool the motor mounts as the exhaust manifold resides close to the mount. Some cars have deflectors to guide heat away or cool air to the mount depending on the location. The V8 cars have tubes going to each mount.

Ram Effect

Brother of The Benz, Dorsey
My second ram effect air intake has improved low end throttle response. As to high speed, my W124030 would always run up to the limiter which is fast enough for me.
My fuel economy it too has been outstanding considerring the mods I've made over the 14 years I've owned her.
For conversation if you are getting 20 mpg and increase that by 10% to 22 mpg, that is nothing to write home about; but to increase by 30% that's making hay, but a highly unlikely accomplishment.
Economy is obtained in the <10% range.
To see if the second intake had a significant change in the intake system; and not having a manometer to establish the air filter chamber pressure compared to atmospheric.
Using as large a hole saw as would fit on the flat circumferance of the air filter housing, I bored as many holes as would fit.
I covered these holes using aluminum Duct Tape.
After running the engine for very few miles, the tape over the holes became concave. This tells me the pressure outside the filter is higher than that on the inside, starving for air.
After the installation of the second Ram Effect Air Intake, the tape became convex, the pressure inside the airfilter housing is above atmospheric.
How much, I have no way of measuring it, but it sure runs good.
For your headlight info:
You can obtain the Grey Market Euro-Lites from,"Tigris International",Box 680222, Houston, Texas 77268. 713/628-1362 FAX 713/628-2209. Cost, $145 each. They inferred they could take the OE head lights in trade.
I hope this helps.

The difference now is instead of the black vinyl tubing I'm using aluminum clothes drier ducting. It is 3 inch diameter and expands to 6 feet in lenght.
I purchased it from The Sears Hardware Store.

Spiderman, I have a question about the end of the tube. Is it attached to anything or is it hanging there like the other posts described?
