Difference in HP between years and S, E class (92-95): LH Module?

92 E320 217 HP, 229 lb-ft torque
92 S320 228 HP, 229 lb-ft torque

92 400E 268 HP, 295 lb-ft
92 400SE 282 HP, 302 lb-ft

92 500E 322 HP, 354 lb-ft
93 500E 315 HP, 347 lb-ft

It looks like swapping the LH computer from a 92 400SE would net a real bump in hp / torque unlike the various chips out there. Is there any downside? One consideration is that you have to match ASR / non ASR computers.

1992 models gained extra power HP thru WOT in the ECU.

In 1993 MB dropped that to help with CAFE ratings...

Even so it appears that there is still more HP and torque to be had between the S and E class models e.g. 92 400 E could gain 14 hp, 7 lb-ft by swapping LH module with one from a 400SE. 92-95 E320 could see a gain of 11 hp by swapping with a 92-95 S320.

It's possible, but I'm not sure it necessarily works on all models. There could be other differences as well (exhaust, intake, cam timing, etc) even in different years of the same chassis. When you compare the same engine between chassis, that goes out the window even more... the S-class may have room for a less restrictive exhaust or cats, for example, but swapping the LH module from the S may not magically increase power in your E. (Or vice-versa.) Also note that the 400E picked up extra power from 93-95, the opposite of what happened with the 500E.

For the 500E, swapping in the 1992 module into a 93/94 model does provide the +7hp gain. However, unless you have access to a dyno or dragstrip, it's hard to tell the difference. I did this swap on my E500 and proved the +7hp gain with back to back dragstrip runs.

the bigger cars (W140, R129) always had higher horsepower, due to a wider engine bay and the resultant "less restrictive exhaust."
